The American Legion Auxiliary schedules a Poppy Day sale on Polk’s Main St this Saturday May 18 during a Monday meeting led by Pres. Anna Eisler. Lauretta Neuhaus to head selling with coffee Kool aid and rolls for workers. Wreaths for Memorial Day to be made May 27 at 1 30. Six Junior Auxiliary girls became seniors and Anna Kisler received a 25 year service pin. Polk Teachers Elected To Polk County Education Posts

Superintendent Walter Nielsen and Allyn Chambers were elected to new roles at the Polk County Educational Association May meeting. Nielsen is VP and will assume the presidency. Chambers becomes secretary. Special guests included Polk High seniors Peg Sealey Loren Wishsen and Kay Nielsen planning careers in education.

Polk High Track Team Wins District Meet at Hastings

Polk High dominates Class D district meet at Hastings scoring 38 points. Mike Lindburg led with wins in 214 hurdles and highs, anchoring a second place 880 relay. Tom Stevens earned a broad jump win and strong sprint results, while Dob Neuhaus and Bob Brockevelt collected titles and placings. The 2 mile relay set a school record at 9 10.2 with a third place, and Lincoln state berths went to four qualifiers.

Nixon McCarthy Lead Local Vote With Absentee Counts

Absentee ballots will decide the local race as Nixon leads McCarthy for president with 100 to 46 while Kennedy trails by 12 with 34 of 86 votes. In the 3rd District race Burdette Flodman leads Donald Dahlin 100 to 85 with East Stromsburg not yet reporting. West Pleasant Home totals show Flodman 53 Dahlin 41, while Railway Commissioner race in the 4th District sees incumbent Marland 31 Sack 27 among six candidates. West Pleasant Home reports 208 voters.

Natalie Hahn Returns From International IFYE Trip

Natalie Hahn has ended a six month stay in New Zealand on an IFYE scholarship and a 20 day visit to India. She delivered 61 talks and presented color slides of Nebraska and the U S, conducted 14 newspaper interviews and 15 radio appearances, and was interviewed on television. A high point was an arranged interview with New Zealand Prime Minister during stays in 17 host families. In India she met Dr Zakir Husain in New Delhi while traveling with Col Rajinder Kalha and family, and she also visited a cousin in Hawaii Sydney Australia Beirut Geneva Paris and London.
