Windy and deadly storm sweeps Polk area with tornado
A Tuesday storm dumped heavy rain and caused high winds that shattered windows. A tornado warning was issued from Lincoln, and a twister touched down eight miles south of Polk, moving northeast toward Bradshaw and Benedict, killing 84 year old Classon Turner and his daughter, injuring twelve, with farm losses reported along its path toward Stromsburg Osceola and Shelby.

Arthur Hemingsen 61 of Shafter California died suddenly during Sunday morning services May 3. A long time mercantile businessman in Shafter he is survived by wife Violet. Mrs Hemingsen is a niece of Albert and Oscar Sundberg and daughter of the late Mrs Henry Sandell. He and his wife visited Polk often and were well known to Polk residents.

May Basket Day Draws Large Crowd
A Polk Commercial club event on Saturday May 2 drew a large crowd for a Maypole winding led by Jr. Auxiliary girls and pre-school through sixth grade. Four Polk Seniors Win Scholarships
Four Polk High School senior boys earned scholarships this semester. Galen Sterner received a $100 Polk County Education Association award for first-year college work, planning to attend Kearney State College. John Reckner won a $100 University of Nebraska Regents scholarship for next fall based on scholastic achievement. Eric Otte earned a $300 Sears and Roebuck Foundation grant for the University of Nebraska College of Agriculture, requiring at least 12 credit hours and a 6.0 GPA. Max Kroger secured a $600 full athletic scholarship to Sioux Falls College for tuition and expenses.
