Community Social Notes From Down Arborville

Miss Lois Cockle of Lincoln visited over the weekend in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Blair. The Twentieth Century Club held its last meeting of the year with twelve members and one visitor. A musical program was led by Mrs. Geo Otte and officers were installed for the coming year. Various families hosted Sunday evening and dinner gatherings. A family church night social is planned at Town Hall May 11th to honor the new minister Rev Hicks with pie and coffee.

Young farmer Carl Burritt dies by suicide

Carl Burritt, 31, committed death by his own action Monday night near Osceola. After he failed to appear at his farm Tuesday a search found him in the barn haymow. He is survived by his widow, two small children, his father William Burritt, two brothers, and a sister. Funeral arrangements not announced.

Polk County Mothers Hopeful For Homecoming On Mother's Day

Several hundred Polk County mothers face Mother's Day without sons in service as many families show multiple service members. Notable among them are Mrs. R. N. Hastings and Mrs. Ben Zedicher of Osceola with four and five sons respectively in the armed forces.

Victor Newman of York and John Johnson attended with Mrs Thos Kreis at the event.

Pvt Edwin Doremus, serving in the infantry on Okinawa, is in the Marine hospital with a bullet scratch to head and shoulder and expects to return to front duty in two or three days. Cpl Charles Widga, on furlough with wife and daughter, has returned to Ft Bragg NC. Lt Raymond Stevens visited family en route from Albany GA to Great Falls MT for Air Transport Command duties. Frank Fossberg and wife report AMM 3-c Gordon Fossberg plans to arrive home Sunday from Chicago after schooling.

Bible Class Honored With Church Reception

The Young People’s Society of the Evangelical Free Church honored Pastor Olson’s Bible Instruction Class with a reception and banquet at the church parlors last Thursday. The class graduated Sunday morning, April 15, with members Vernette Kingsley, Maxine Kingsley, Shirley Nyberg, Dale Nyberg, Dorothy Hanquist, Roger Hanquist, Melva Jean Monson, and Leonard Anderson. Lt Vergil Blase, back from overseas, arrived Saturday to visit relatives, and Rudolph Ehn S1c, also returned from duty, arrived Tuesday for a 15 day leave with his father Emil Ehn and relatives.

Miss Marlys Crewdson daughter of Mr and Mrs R Crewdson North Platte became the bride of Carl Waak Jr son of Mr and Mrs Carl Waak Polky community in a ceremony at the bride’s home Sunday April 29 Rev Alfred Saeger read the double ring rite in the presence of immediate families a few close friends Lucille Campbell served as maid of honor LeMoyne Waak attended the groom The bride wore a coral two piece dress with white gardenia corsage and white accessories The attendant wore powder blue and white gardenias The groom and his attendant wore brown suits with white carnations A reception followed for about 25 relatives and friends The cake was a three tier with a miniature bride and groom They are at home in North Platte 405 West 9th St after a brief wedding trip to Colorado.

Polk Rural Field Day Hosts May 11 at Polk School

On Friday May 11 Polk School hosts its annual rural field day with a morning program featuring rural school numbers aided by the band and Polk Schools. The Polk Commercial Club provides ice cream for picnickers and cash prizes for division winners. At 1 00 field events run under Coach Elliott, points determine the trophy for the school with the highest total. All rural schools are invited.
