Polk High School led district music competition at Howells on April 22 23 earning 16 superior ratings and 8 excellents. Entries ranged from mixed chorus and glee groups to vocal solos, instrumentals, and ensembles with notable performers Dee Willis Arlyce Lind Myrna Mer chant Dennis Sealey Carol Litty and others. Banquet honors 50th alumni anniversary May 28 6 45 p m at the high school auditorium. Walter J Johnson of Denver died at 71 and was brother to Oscar E and Victor J Johnson. Robert E Stromberg returned from six weeks in Seoul Korea as a US government agent. Local notices include visitors from Laurel Lincoln and Omaha and church conference attendees in Bethany Baptist church Omaha.
On Thursday April 29 neighbors and friends gathered at the Richardsons home to prepare fields for spring planting for Mr Richardson who is ill in the Veterans Hospital in Omaha. Participants with tractors shredders and disks included Maurice Flick Clarence Rahrs Orlie Miller Lester Rohrs Hershel Shenk Don Miller Roger Werner plus Larry Hoffman Marvin Shenk Fred Laessle Martin Smith Marvin Schulze Lyle Johnson Henry Blase Wilfred Stephens Dave Meline Alvin Smith Leo Litty Don Dose Wayne Ramsey Wendell Shaw and Lawrence Hoffman. The Farmers Co op Oil Co of Polk donated the gas for the tractors. Ladies providing food for lunch and dinner were Mines Maurice Flick Lyle Johnson Martin Smith Clarence Rahrs Lawrence Hoffman Fred Laessle Henry Blase Herschel Shenk Wilfred Stephens Leo Litty and Wayne Ramsey.
The April 17 ceremony for Mrs. Shirley Lemp and Merlin Nyberg took place at Highland Park Evangelical Free Church in Columbus with Rev. Harold Vanderploeg officiating. Attendants included Carolyn Picard from St. Paul and Bert Nyberg of Omaha. A Columbus Cafe dinner followed, and a May 2 reception at the church honored the newlyweds with over 100 relatives and friends present.
Over 260 seventh and eighth graders from county schools attended Polk County Conservation Day at Osceola on Friday April 30. Forenoon speakers included Raymond Burke Oliver Wolff C A Crémer Dale Williamson Harold Gilman and James Eriksen. Afternoon tours covered Walter Jones Philip Kaczor and Mrs G D Bryan farms practicing sound conservation. Sponsors are the Polk County Soil and Water Conservation Dist County Extension Service County Education Dept and the Osceola Chamber of Commerce which provided lunches and will sponsor a poster contest with thirty one prizes.
Ida Norene Kisler Green born February 1 1897 in Arborville died April 27 at St Vincent Hospital Sioux City Iowa at age 68 married December 2 1917 to Keith Everett Green mother of nine children Frances Margaret Marjorie Wreatha Grace Alice Bernita Sylva and LeRoy with spouses in Rockford Omaha Denver Guam Grand Island Lincoln and South Sioux City survived by two brothers a sister 33 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren funeral at Polk Methodist Church April 30 with Rev Harold Jensen soloist and pallbearers Carl Bedient Owen Bedient Fred Bedient Gerald Stevens Alvin Kisler Tom Resnick burial Arborville Cemetery. Verland Widga and Howard Romsstal attended a fire school meeting in Grand Island.
Reggy Green son of Mr and Mrs Everett W Green was elected to Cardinal Key and Blue Key at Nebraska Wesleyan University. The new members were tapped during Spring Fete ceremonies at Ira J Taylor gymnasium. Membership in both groups is based on scholarship and campus activities.
Natalie Hahn will fly from Lincoln to Scottsbluff on Monday May 10 to represent the University of Nebraska at Hospitality Day. She was one of seven of 410 students chosen by Dr. Virginia Trotter to visit Western Nebraska high schools and discuss opportunities in home economics journalism radio and television. Arlan Stromberg of Nebraska Wesleyan ran in a Sioux City track meet and a Sioux Falls meet helping set school records with the 4x4 relay and medley relay. The Pork Woman's Club traveled to Grand Island April 21 for dinner and a Mary Poppins show then lunch and a year-end meeting. Arborville 4-H Riders rode by the Platte River with George Wochner as leader.
