Polk Garden Club Plans Flower Gardens and Baskets

The April 20 Polk Garden Club meeting at Mrs Lackey's home included 10 members and 1 guest. Under Mrs Neeman the group discussed future flower garden planting. A workshop formed the afternoon program as baskets for hanging on Main Street were prepared, with refreshments served by Mrs Lackey and Mrs Sundberg. Mrs Saylor joined the club.

Polk County Recreation Assn Pushes Hundred Barrier Breakthrough

The Polk County Recreation Association nears full charter signups with 28 memberships left after an initial 130, raising initiation fees once full. Polk society bowls party and community notices in town

The Polk Methodist Children's Society held a bowling party at York Bowling Alley with forty four attendees. The event was sponsored by Mrs Stevens and Mrs Stromberg plus Mrs Irvin Anderson. Other items include a birth announcement for Dean Fredrick Willadsen born April 18 in Central City, a Home Ec Style Show May 5 with a one act play, a welfare tea in Osceola, May Day activities, and local social notes and visits.

Mrs Merlin Nyberg Feted at Easter Shower

Mrs Merlin Nyberg, a recent bride, was guest of honor at a shower Saturday evening April 24 at Evangelical church parlors hosted by the Home Builders Sunday school class. Games, a vocal duet by Patty and Dorothy Stranberg, and gifts marked the event. Lunch for 50 guests followed a pastel decorated serving table with a floral centerpiece.

Students excel in Iowa Tests of Educational Development

The Iowa Tests were given to all 9th and 11th graders on March 30 31 and results released this week. Profiles show individual growth by comparing thousands of students from diverse schools. Country Woman's Club Meets at Mrs Coover's Home

Mrs Coover hosted the Country Woman's Club on Thursday afternoon April 22 with 15 members and 9 visitors. The meeting opened with America the Beautiful and a flag salute. Edna Sundberg was elected treasurer. Myrtle Johnson won the hostess gift. The program committee led several games and lunch was served.

Birthday Celebration at Evangelical Free Church

Last Tuesday afternoon the WMS of the Evangelical Free Church gathered at the church parlors to honor Mrs. William Pinkernell on her birthday anniversary. A program led by Mrs. Reuben Hanquist featured the theme This is your life with photos from Betty’s family album. Birthday cards and monetary gifts were given, a butterfly birthday cake baked by Mrs. Roland Bodine centered the serving table.

DuRells Die in 3 Car Crash Near Crystal River Florida

Fullerton acting postmaster Lloyd W. DuRell and his wife Helen Richmond DuRell, ages 63 and 62, were fatally injured in a three car crash near Crystal River Florida on Thursday afternoon April 22. Lloyd was a 1919 Fullerton High School graduate. Helen, born in Polk, had a long local newspaper career as editor and regional correspondent and later ran Richmond Ready-to-War with her mother’s business. Funeral services were held in Fullerton.
