Field west of Don Millers hosts a kite day with prizes for youngest and oldest flyers, prettiest kite, smallest and biggest kites, and more. The writ talks of past windy weeks, 90 degree heat, and a shift back to cooler weather, with local notes on gardening, fishing trips, and humorous asides.
Mrs Arthur Adelson died suddenly at 12 15 A M Sunday April 30 at the Adelson home near Polk. Funeral services will be held Thursday May 4 at 2 00 PM from the Polk Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband Arthur a daughter Melba Ann of Polk a son L D Bud Carlson of Jacksonville Miss and a daughter in law and four grandchildren. Visiting hours at Kepner Roberts Mortuary Osceola are 10 AM to 8 PM. Obituary next week.
County court records list multiple traffic and four drinking on highway citations. Individuals from Osceola Shelby Genoa Stromsburg York Omaha and South Dakota are fined amounts ranging from 5 to 9.70 dollars plus basic fines for offenses including night speed and stop sign violations.
Polk area residents report weekend social visits with the Hoffmans stopping in Osceola to see the Johnsons. On Friday the Dittmers visited the Furgesons in Clarks.
The aquarium wisdom notes a fish’s preference for the fisherman. Even the best bait fails if the angler displeases the fish. Dr Hadley’s beard theory suggests bearded fishers only catch carp, which are neither discerning nor tasty.
The American Legion contributes $100 to start the fund. The Country Women’s Club adds $5 and the Village Board approves a $100 withdrawal from the Park and Amusement Fund, bringing the total to $205.
Eighteen Polk Methodist WSCS members and four guests toured Omaha by bus visiting the Krol Home Blair and the Wesley House of the Omaha City Missions and attended the show The Bible. They returned for supper at Wahoo. One car load attended the WSCS district meeting at Columbus on Thursday.
A new 4-H Club on entomology was organized Friday evening April 28 at the Ted Otte home. The Arborville Boys and Bugs Club elected officers Steve Morris president Lawson Reckner vice president Dennis Ditloff secretary Kevin Graves news reporter. Lunch was served by Mrs Otte. The next meeting is June 7 at Mrs John Wochner home leader of the club. Kevin Graves reporter.
Mr and Mrs Grant Johnson and Mrs Margaret Bower stayed with Mr and Mrs Manley Fisher in Blair to mark their 50th anniversary. Polk guests included Mr and Mrs Ester Lackey and Mr and Mrs Ralph Fisher. About forty dined at the Cottonwood Marina Club hosted by the Fishers.
Mr and Mrs Russell Fjell and Mrs Gerald Holm visited Gerald Holm at Bryan Memorial Hospital Lincoln on Sunday. Attendees at the Great Plains Baptist Conference at Gothenburg included Donald Hanquist Pastor and Mrs Wood and several Glasser and Sandell family members.
The American Legion Auxiliary sets an election of officers for Monday May 8 at %:00 p.m. All members urged to attend and participate in the leadership vote.
Faithful Workers Club met at Mrs. Don Hudson's home with four teens and three visitors. Mrs. Winnifred Lackey led and plans for a Polk park picnic in May were made. Mrs. Martin Hoffman led the program. Password was played. Mrs. Darold Hoffman had the specialty. Mrs. Lyle Widge won the hostess gift.
A letter from Bernice Ehn of Central City Nebraska dated April 27 1967 accompanies a $4.00 check for another year of the newspaper She asks if they can stand another year and notes they have made it okay so far The missive is signed Bernice Ehn and addressed to Norris and mentions Central City Neb.
Mrs. Alvena Lind and Mrs. Dean Donelson were Monday evening visitors of Mrs. Nettie Carlson. Mr. and Mrs. Ted Dittmer and family were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Jasper at Stromsburg.
Shelby and Polk will open the girls softball season on Thursday night May 4 with a 7 30 start. The girls games are normally Wednesday but a date conflict moved this game to Thursday.
John Siford Gustafson aged 83 of 212 Nebraska Ave York died Saturday April 22 at a Hastings hospital. Born April 14 1884 near Swede Home Polk County he married Mary McClees in September 1908. Survived by his wife four brothers and four sisters. Funeral April 25 Metz Chapel York interment Greenwood Cemetery York.
Mrs Nina Sedan 62 of Boise Idaho native of Polk died after a lingering illness. Survived by husband Forrest Sedan three brothers and one sister. Graveside service at Swede Plain Cemetery conducted by Rev Willis Patten Wall Funeral Home in charge. Vernon L Knerr 50 of Stromsburg died Saturday evening. Services held at Stromsburg Methodist Church burial in Stromsburg. Survived by widow two sons and two daughters, parents a sister and a brother. A daughter and brother preceded him in death.
Dana Alden Vincent, 23, of Stroms burg wed Linda Kay Merritt, 16. William L. Kalsey, 37, of Columbus married Irene Mae Patchen, 35, in a ceremony officiated by County Judge Eldon R. Johnson on April 28.
Condson Shostrom, son of Mr and Mrs Don Shostrom, admitted to Osceola hospital Monday for medical treatment. Mrs Oscar Johnson admitted to Central City hospital Friday.
The Rev Harold Keelling, pastor of the Evangelical Free Church at Polk, sustained minor injuries in a Tuesday auto accident in Stromsburg. He was hospitalized overnight at Osceola.
