Sunday morning brings a deep wet snow storm in Polk with thunder and lightning. Residents in New Orleans and Polk observe the unusual weather melt by afternoon as kite flying plans are discussed for May 7 and June Sundays.
Don Stange and wife plan relocation from Stanton to Shenandoah Iowa after the school year. Stange will coach ninth and tenth grade teams and teach physical education. He previously coached football at Polk and Stanton structures.
The American Legion Auxiliary visited Beatrice State Home on Monday April 17 offering a two hour tour and delivering about 300 plastic bottles. Participants included Ruth Bills Mrs Vic Doremus Mrs Leonard Warnick Orpha Due Anna Kisler Mrs Dwayne Miller Mrs Don Miller and Mrs Arnold Neuhaus.
Miss Ellen Sprau formerly at Halsey-Dunning High School signs to direct the Polk Public Schools music department for 1967 68. She is Seward High School graduate and Nebraska Wesleyan University class of 1965 alumna.
Polk Legion Post 160 donated 100 to the Summer Recreation Fund Drive. The money comes from profits of Teen Age dances sponsored by the Legion last fall and winter.
Gary Merle Warden will coach Polk football next year and teach science and physical education. In three years at Halsey-Dunning he posted 19 wins and 7 losses with two undefeated seasons. He is a 1963 Nebraska graduate and was a member of the Cornhusker football squad.
CHOSEN IFYE DELEGATE Natalie Hahn, daughter of Mrs. Dwight Burney, and a senior at the University of Nebi, has been chosen by the National 4H Foundation to be an International Foreign Exchange student. She will spend six months in New Zealand beginning in September. Natalie's plans include being a member of Sen. Hruska's staff in Washington, D. C. this summer.
The Home Society Club met with Mrs Mervin Shenk on Wednesday April 19 with 12 members and 3 visitors present. Officers elected were President Mrs M O Johnson Vice President Mrs Mervin Shenk Secretary Treasurer Mrs Virgil Bush and Mrs Richard Johnson received the hostess gift. Mr and Mrs Leslie Adelson were Sunday supper guests of Mr and Mrs Ollie Johnson. Mrs Bertha Jones was a Sunday dinner guest of Mr and Mrs Clarence Rodine.
Polk High School tied with Clarkson for top honors at the District IT Music Contest in Howells on April 20 and 21. Polk entered 24 items from eight Class C and D schools, earning 10 superior ratings and several excellents and goods led by mixed chorus and various soloists and ensembles.
Mr and Mrs Lloyd Stromberg return from Lackland Air Force Base San Antonio where son Gary Stromberg graduates as Second Lieutenant in the US Air Force Gary a 1966 Nebraska Wesleyan alum and will report to Anchorage Alaska after furlough Hosts in San Antonio included Mr and Mrs James Sundberg The Strombergs stayed with the Marvin Stromberg family in Dallas on the way home
The Hamilton Busy Beaver Girls 4-H Club held its fourth meeting on April 11 1967 at 4 00 p m in the Lutheran church basement Hordville with hostess Diane Blase. Nineteen girls attended and discussions were given. The group did matching plain and printed materials. The next meeting is set for April 25 at 4 00 with Dorothy Bush as hostess.
Mrs Gordon Johnson, Gary and Jane were Wednesday forenoon lunch guests of Mrs Rudolph Gustafson. Mrs Hilmer Jones spent the past week in Columbus with her son and family Mr and Mrs Eugene Jones.
Wendell Shaw organizes volunteers to finish shingling a Polk house after newcomer Alford Green slips from the roof and injures himself. Mrs Green remains in the hospital. Help is welcome Saturday at 1 00 p m at the site.
The 53rd Polk High School Alumni Banquet will be in the high school auditorium on Saturday May 7 at 6 30 p m. Committees include Program chaired by Roy Glasser Jr with several members, Decorating led by Wm Blender, Invitation chaired by Virgil Bush, Dishes led by Lowell Bills and Lee Anderson, Tables and Chairs chaired by Lyle Dornburgh with Shenk and others, Nominating chaired by James Lindburg with Gordon Fossberg, and RSVP contact Anna Kisler.
A meeting at Arborville Town Hall is set for Monday May 1 at 830 PM DST to plan Memorial Day observances. All interested residents are urged to attend.
Newly elected officers of the Polk County Republican Women include Laura Delfs as president and Allegra Johnson as vice president. They succeed Perry Sapp and Lulu Ward. Paul Monson was re elected secretary at the meeting held last Saturday in Stromsburg.
The Platte Valley Association for Retarded Children will hold its regular meeting at the Columbus Opportunity Center on Thursday evening April 27 at 8 P M George Thomas of the Nebraska Psychiatric Institute will be speaker All visitors are welcome.
Mrs Herb Olson Mrs Forrest Berggren and Mrs Dick Nelson from Stromsburg were Saturday coffee guests of Mrs Oscar Jones. Mrs Hannah Carlson entertained to dinner Sunday at the Corner Cafe in honor of Mrs Albin Larson s birthday. Guests included Mr and Mrs Albin Larson of Stromsburg Mr and Mrs Carl Carlstrom and family and Ron Ringsten of Spaulding. Mr and Mrs John Nyberg and Mr and Mrs Dale Nyberg were supper guests of Mr and Mrs Ron Nyberg at Grand Island.
Polk was the top scorer at Stromsburg on Monday April 17 with 89 points, winning shuttle relays 880 and 440 while Polk, Palmer, Clarks, and Cubs athletes led event finishes. Neuhaus won pole vault Sealey won long jump with Stevens close behind, and multiple Cubs placers filled sprint and distance relays.
The Polk County Track Meet held at Polk on April 14 saw Shelby win with 59 points, Osceola 41, Polk 26, and Stromsburg 15. Polk’s Darwin Neuhaus earned one first place in pole vault at 10 ft 11 in. Dick Sealey nearly won the broad jump with 20 ft 2 3/4 in and timed 10.7 in the 100. He trailed Treadway of Shelby in the 100 and 220 by small margins. Mike Lindburg took second in the high hurdles and Steve Saylor placed third in pole vault. The mile relay finished second while freshman and 880 relays each placed third.
Here I Am announces the birth of an eight pound fourteen ounce baby girl born Monday April 24 at Central City hospital.
