Polk High Holds Annual Field Day at School

Polk High staged its annual field day at the school athletic field on Wednesday April 26 featuring soft ball and track events for high school and grade school students in both girls and boys divisions. Senior versus Junior teams won the soft ball game 12 to 2 by the Juniors and Sophomores. Winners include Floyd Taylor and Marvin Branting in multiple boys events along with Irene Whitacre and Dorothy Mundt leading the girls sprint and field events.

Two Men Granted U.S. Citizenship in Osceola

In Osceola district court Gust T Johnson and Claus G Oberg both Stromsburg natives were naturalized as U S citizens. A brief program with prayer remarks by Rev Monkman and a performance by the Osceola High School girls marked the ceremony.

Threshing Machine Notices Urged For Polk Farmers

Polk county farmers are reminded to post approved notices on combines and threshing machines before use to curb spread of bindweed and other noxious weeds. Law also requires cleaning equipment after harvest on farms infested with specified weeds. Copies available from the Polk county farm bureau.

Polk County Farmers Urged to Vaccinate Horses Against Sleeping Sickness

Polk county farmers are vaccinating horses for sleeping sickness amid last year’s toll and expected rise. Veterinarians urge vaccination a month before May onset, use Western chick embryo vaccine, avoid nonstandard vaccines sold by peddlers, and vaccinate in groups to save travel. Farmers without card replies may still vaccinate at $2.50 via local vets.

The May Breakfast served by the Ladies Aid at Mrs. E. E. Pengelly’s home drew a large crowd Monday morning. The menu included fruit cocktail, bacon and eggs, hot biscuits and honey, and coffee. The event supported by a Ladies Aid contest group aimed to raise funds.

A home talent Minstrel Show will be held in the High School auditorium on Friday evening May 5 to raise funds for the Boy Scouts and Junior League Baseball boys. A small admission will be charged and attendance encouraged.

Polk Commercial Club Hosts Annual Meeting at Viking Hall

The Polk Commercial Club invites businesswomen and wives of members to its May 8 gathering at Viking Hall at 7 PM. Judge E G Kroger of Grand Island will speak, with Geneva high school music winners performing. The program includes solos, a girls sextette, a baritone, community singing, and a ladies charity dinner. Tickets are marketed this weekend.

The Polk County Extension Service celebrates its 21st year locally and 25th nationally with a pageant on May 8 at Scott's Hall in Stromsburg. Anna J Nyberg born June 6 1887 in Hamilton County Nebraska died April 28 1939 in Polk Nebraska at age 51 years 10 months 22 days. She lived in the area most of her life with years on a York County farm. She married Andy L Carlson June 1 1909 and had two sons Harold and Clifford. Burial was in Polk cemetery after funeral at the Baptist Church conducted by Rev R M Bailey.

Polk Women's Club May Breakfast at Mission Camp Grounds

Eighteen Polk Women's Club members met Tuesday at 10 a.m. for a May breakfast at the Mission Camp Grounds south of Polk. Hostesses were Mrs. Henry Horstman Mrs. Orlie Miller and Mrs. Howard Herbes. Menu included grapefruit ham and eggs hot rolls jelly coffee and doughnuts. A brief business session followed and members discussed beautifying the vacant jet south of Hill's Produce and planned next year's club work.
