Swede Plain WSCS to Meet at Church Parlors in May

The Swede Plain Woman’s Society of Christian Service will gather at the church parlors on Wednesday May 9. Hostesses include Mrs. Harvey Lind, Mrs. Roland Bodine, and Miss Edith Naslund. Leaders are Mrs. Paul Cuover and Mrs. Cafford Carlson.

Faithful Workers Hold April Meeting

The Faithful Workers Club met Wednesday April 25 at Mrs Lyle Dornburghs home. County President Mrs Levert Peterson from Stromsburg reported on the State Convention. A pantomime of a mock wedding and flower name games were enjoyed. 14 members and 3 visitors attended and lunch was served. The next meeting will be hosted by Mrs Fred Williams.

Leland Bills Arrives in Japan with 160th Infantry

A letter from Leland Bills to his parents reports he landed safely in Japan and is stationed at Camp Haugen about 400 miles north of Yokohama. He serves with the 160th Infantry Regiment, 40th Division.

Twenty years ago Mrs. William P Warnick died at 81 on April 19 with funeral at the Baptist church and burial at Polk cemetery. Mrs. George Jackson formerly Ruth Salchow died April 23 and was buried from the Lutheran church. Ruth Ann Murphy and George Clifford Wurtz wed April 19 and will reside in Creston Iowa. Henry Mahnken died April 23 at 71 with funeral at the Lutheran church. Olaf Nyberg and wife celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. A birthday surprise dinner was held for Mrs. Albert Nelson at her son Lawrence Sundberg’s home. Farmer Store Saturday specials include sateen, pillow tubing, turkish toweling, and auto seat covering.

Coordinated Conservation Plans Outlined for Polk County

The Polk County Soil Conservation Supervisors the Soil Conservation Service and the PMA met April 24 at the PMA office in Osceola to review the 1951 program and plan the 1952 Soil Conservation Program. The PMA will continue payments to farmers for conservation work while SCS handles technical permanent practices. No agency reorganization. services remain as before with County Agent and FHA input.

Memorial to Be Presented Sunday at Methodist Church

A memorial dedication will be held next Sunday morning at the Methodist church for Arnold Ignacson Gilbert Benson and Ronald Benson. Everett Green will lead the ceremony and the new moving picture projector will be dedicated for the benefit of the church and community.

Polk City News Briefs ten years ago snowfall and local changes

Ten years ago Saturday brought a three inch snowfall to Polk. Frank Davis bought Crow's Drug Store and moved from Grant six years after operating the Rex all Drug Store, which he purchased from James Felton. Mr. and Mrs. Crow will live in California. Hans Schrader, 86, longtime resident near Hordville, died Thursday with funeral at Mt. Zion Church. Henry Reed, 52, of Polk, sustained a broken back and internal injuries after a scaffold fall at Oscar Jones farm, taken to York Hospital. A charivari welcomed newlyweds Earl Waak and Mrs. Norma Nierman. their Easter Sunday wedding was at the Ern est Nierman home. Polk High School to graduate 27 students on May 22.

Waldon McNaught Places In District Track Meet

Waldon McNaught helped Polk runners at the District State Qualifying Track Meet in David City by winning his 880 yard heat and earning third in that event after time comparisons. Dennis Light won his heat in the mile but did not reach the final, leaving two state qualifiers.

Sheraled Hill Wins Sixth District Medical Essay Contest

Sheralee Hill is named the Sixth District winner in the Nebraska State Medical Association Women's Auxiliary essay contest. More than 500 essays were entered, and she will receive a $25 bond. A state winner will be chosen from the twelve district winners.

Three new homes begin construction around Polk. Clarence Creech farm east of town starts dismantling the present structure for a ranch style house. Ralph Fisher starts a bungalow on the south edge and M G Lindburg plans a ranch on vacant lots south of Harold Nelson residence.

Arborville Sunshiner's Club Hosts April Home Session

Nine members of the Arborville Sunshiner's Project Club met Friday afternoon April 27 at Mrs. Ardell Otte's home. Mrs. Helen Hoffman and Mrs. Ruth Schrader completed a clothing demonstration, then Mrs. Wilma Flick and Mrs. Evaline Reckner taught a lesson on home lighting. After the business hour a social time followed with refreshments served by Mrs. Otte.

District 66 Schoolhouse hosts featured a Friday night card party with awards for women and men. Arborville 4-H met April 25 at the Hall with Alvah Hecht presenting project films and discussions on demonstrations sewing and mitten making.
