Nebraska 1951 schedule hints at tough foes and key games

With spring football done, Nebraska fans eye next fall’s schedule. Big Seven opponents include Oklahoma, Minnesota, Miami and Texas Christian. The Huskers face Oklahoma at season’s end in Lincoln in a potential battle for top national standings. Kansas State, under Bill Meek, is expected to be sharp. Jim Klingsporn Wins Baker Trust Award

Grinnell College awarded one of seven Baker trust scholarships to Jim Klingsporn announced by President Samuel Stevens. A Polk High School student and Nebraska entrant, he is the son of Mr and Mrs Ewald Klingsporn and will graduate in May after competing with hundreds from across the United States.

Merry Makers 4-H Club Reorganized and Active

The Merry Makers 4-H Club, now in its sixth year with 18 members, earned a gold seal and charter while planning 4 H Sunday observances at the Methodist church on April 22. New members include Karan Ang, Alnetta and Joan Leamons, Joan Cramer, and Janice Carlson.

Negro soprano impresses at Polk concert

Miss Wylma Fletcher a Negro soprano from Galesburg Illinois sang in a sacred and secular program at First Baptist church last Friday evening. About 100 people attended despite bad weather with highlights including three self composed pieces The Man on the Shore of Galilee Just Follow Him and Everybody Oughta Pray. The choir group included songs Git on Board Lil Chillun Climbin up de Mountain and Old Mother Hubbard. The Lord's Prayer closed the concert under the organ and piano accompaniment of Mrs Thelma Loye of Chicago. Reverend Gertrude McCullum of Bladen Nebraska served as manager.

Don Miller and Roger Long Meet in Japan Reunion

Rev and Mrs C W Long and Mr and Mrs Orlie Miller received word that their sons Don Miller and Roger Long met in Yokosuka Japan. It was their first reunion since deployment in Japan and the two boys planned three days together near Tokyo. Mrs Verna Stark of York visited Mr and Mrs Roy Stouffer last week.

Polk High students shine at Fine Arts Festival

Three Polk High School students and instructor Miss Lucado attended the Fine Arts Festival in Lincoln Friday held in the Temple Building. Jack Myers won a superior rating in Interpretative Oratory for Give Us To See, Sheralee Hill earned a No 2 in dramatic reading Daddy Doc, and Jim Euingsporn placed No 8 in radio newscasting.

Dial Phone Switch Over to Begin Soon

Work will begin about April 30 as a large crew installs the dia!phone system in Polk. The Central Office east of the Lloyd Kroger home will be finished this week and the switchover to new numbers and dialing will be completed by May 22.

Softball Schedule First Half 1951

The softball committee led by Bud Bolton announces first half schedule and a ban on spiked shoes for all players. Games begin 8:00 PM with a 9:15 PM second game. June 12 and 19 start at 6:30 PM due to three games on those nights.

Midget Baseball Spirit Grows in Community Plans

Knute Johnson the midget baseball coach seeks players for summer team as Commercial Club launches a new program. The twelve game schedule lists matchups: Stromsburg at Polk, Osceola at Shelby, Shelby at Stromsburg, Polk at Osceola, with additional July dates to be announced. Ramblers Edge Kroger's: One Victory Secured
