Merchant Marine Cadets Prove Valor At Sea and In War
The United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point trains cadet midshipmen who serve at sea during normal courses and in war. Seven have won distinguished service medals while over 600 abandoned ship due to enemy action and more than 150 died in action. Cadets participate in invasions from Normandy to Guadalcanal, with stories of heroism including Dudley and Wood at Guadalcanal and Thomas Jr receiving the Distinguished Service Medal for saving a shipmate. Kings Point combines sea duty with advanced training to produce licensed officers and naval reservists for America’s merchant fleet and wartime service.
