A stretch of ideal spring weather in Nebraska ended with wintry blasts late Monday. Snow covered the ground Tuesday with temperatures dropping below freezing and concern rising for early fruit trees. A second heavy snowfall Tuesday night brought Old Man Winter back to the front page.
Poor weather and low interest produced the lightest vote in village history with 73 ballots. Village Board winners: Dave Ekdahl 65 and Leo Wurtz 46. Board of Education winners: Harold Nelson 66 and Elwood Sandell 31. other votes include Co. J. McCoy 36, Chas. Smith 12, Clarence Bryant 27, Walter Nelson 16.
Second Lieutenant Donald B Muller of the Third Marine Division was killed in action on Iwo Jima March 14, 1945. A Nebraska university graduate, he enlisted in 1942 and was commissioned in 1944. He married Kathryn M Huston in Los Angeles October 23, 1944. Mrs Muller teaches in Hooper Nebraska High School. his parents and three sisters live in Thayer Nebraska.
Polk County soil conservation office opens at courthouse site with District Conservationist H A Milten assisting and in attendance at a directors meeting. Raymond Pierson and Orval Efchenhorst join Mille in organizing the local office as Chamber of Commerce hosts a luncheon with district leaders and visitors. Farmers invited to meet Pierson to discuss soil water conservation and irrigation.
Miss Jeanelle Kroger visited Clarence Rehrs during Easter vacation. Forrest Sedan and Boise guests were hosted by Kenneth Van Ostrand's family in Benedict. War clothing drive urged nationwide in April led by Wm. Jeffers of Omaha. Several households hosted dinners and luncheons with friends and relatives. A blizzard-like snowstorm dropped over eight inches. temperatures hovered near freezing. Pfc. James Hartline visited from Grand Island. Eulala Stromberg stayed with Lloyd Stromberg. Neal Doremus ill last week.
Gerald Stevens writes his mother that he is hospitalized in the Philippines with yellow jaundice as his brother Robert serves nearby. Three local men W E Brahmsteadt Roy Perkins and Ross Goethe fought with the 101st Airborne at Bastogne where McAuliffe said Nuts and the pocket fell after seven days. Perkins wounded and recovering at O Riley General Hospital. V Clarence J Bodine recently graduated radio school in Memphis and is now in gunners school at Purcell Oklahoma. Donald Ostberg and David Swanson Navy men in the Philippines visited two huts apart after seventeen months at sea. Lisle D Carlson Naval Aviation Cadet transferred to Pensacola after Norman Texas training aims to wing and commission. Carlsons formerly Polk residents. Perkins returns home for emergency furlough due to ill grandfather C D Perkins. Clarence promoted to Captain while in Wales England.
Rudeman of Clarks visited Sunday with Mr and Mrs Grant Willits and daughter. The Ekstrom and Carlson families hosted events with Orpha Ekstrom’s birthday anniversary celebrated. Rena Mae Willits dined with the Fisher family. Other Osceola gatherings included visits to J. G. Carlson’s home and a Saturday dinner at Edith and Walter Anderson’s.

Miss Blanche Leach of Mason City spent the weekend with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Co. I. Leach and relatives. Rev and Mrs. Paul Lemke attended the Good Friday service at Central City and were guests of Rev. and Mrs. Williams.
Miss Jocelyn Joan James and Merle Leroy Stromberg of Polk wed in a four o clock double ring ceremony at Palmer Methodist Church on Thursday March 29. Attendants included maid of honor Miss Wsther Yangger and best man James Lindburg with ushers Leonard Stromberg and William James Jr. After a reception the couple left for Polk Nebraska to start married life. Separately Polk County Local Selective Service Board announced several registrants accepted for armed forces training, including Bernard Matticks and LaVerne Abbott among others from Osceola, Polk, Silver Creek, Shelby, and nearby towns.
The AAA office notes copper wire availability for farm wiring and permits for building extensions tied to unit counts. Polk County farmers secured permissions to buy a water unit and a bathtub, while dairy slips are due by May 31 for January to March subsidies. Applications for lumber focus on breeders hog houses barns and chicken houses repairs.

Tractor safety emphasized with 2 million tractors in service and high accident risk. common causes include overturns, PTO injuries, cranking, and fires.
Easter Sunday fire near Polk engulfed a large chicken house at the Leonard Hoffman farm south east of Polk. About twenty trucks of spectators arrived as firefighters saved part of the lumber and limited chickens remain. Cause undetermined at first. townspeople misread the fire bell as wartime news.
Family and friend gatherings fill the Easter weekend in Polk and Stromsburg areas. Omaha visitors include the Cramers and McClures while local hosts host dinners, birthdays, showers, and church activities with numerous relatives and neighbors listed.
Polk County aims to collect a car load of waste paper by May 1 to benefit the Veterans Administration. A portion of postage proceeds will fund luxuries for wounded veterans in U S hospitals, with the rest supporting civic improvement locally. Tie with a strong cord and leave at the old Fire Hall.
L M Smith former Polk county treasurer and Columbus bank affiliate, with Wilfred Reisenrath of Columbus tied to the Internal Revenue Department, announced the purchase of the York clothing store from Russ Williams who has run it for 34 years. Possession to be taken after May 1 with Williams remaining as York county ration board chairman. Polk county residents have long bought clothing there.
