Spring Musical Reveals Unusual Talent at Polk High
Polk school music departments under Mr Ramp staged a spring musical last Friday in the high school auditorium. The mixed chorus of over 50 voices opened the program to near full seats, with praise for fine directing and a strong chorus. Highlights included a piano duet by Nelson and Freeman, readings by Doris Reckner and Dorothy Blin, and a boys octet selection. The junior band made its first appearance, drawing enthusiasm for future Polk Band prospects, featuring nine year old Eugene Olson whose cornet encore drew applause. Saxophone quartet performed twice, and the director Earns congratulations for shaping a talented young musical group with a bright future.

Polk Officer Promoted to Captain in 9th Armored Division
Captain C. B. Penrose of the 60th Armored Infantry Battalion has been promoted from first lieutenant. He helped lead rifle company actions in Belgium and Luxembourg as the 9th Armored Division halted a potential enemy breakthrough and protected vital supply lines. He is married to Mrs. C. B. Penrose, who is staying with her parents in Polk.

Mrs May Lindburg of Central City reports her son S-Set Virgil Lindburg has been missing in action since March 11 while serving with the Army Transport Command flying over the hump into China from India. He is a Polk High School graduate class of 1937.

Harvey C Troyer, once Polk’s cement contractor and piano dealer, died after being struck by a truck in St. Joseph, Missouri. He helped start Polk’s cement and cement block business, later sold it, and sold musical instruments. Survived by wife, son Chester, daughter Irene.

Twenty churches are invited to a Conservative Baptist Missionary Rally at the local Baptist Church on April 4 starting at 2:00 PM. Rev. Rodney C Gould will speak on policy and progress of the Foreign Mission Society, followed by a discussion. Miss Dora Johnson will give a missionary address, with supper hosted by church women and fellowship after. The evening service at 8:00 PM features a moving picture and a second missionary address by Rev. William Peck. Public invitation extended for the evening service.

County Chairman Robert Taddiken announced Polk County has 186 142 bushels of corn under government loan, up 27 449 since March 1, as 1944 production and 1945 prospects influence storage. The auto 3 percent moisture limit will drop next Monday April 12, stabilizing eligibility.

Sally Brigham Wins Carl Raymond Gray Scholarship in 4 H
Sally Brigham of Shelby, daughter of Rex and Mrs. Brigham, receives the Carl Raymond Gray Scholarship from Union Pacific Railroad Company to the College of Agriculture. Twenty three Nebraska 4 H members will share the award. Sally, active in Victory 4 H Club, has held roles from reporter to president and has shown at county and state fairs. She plans to attend college in the fall. Mrs Ernest Lees of Shelby earns a trip to the State 4 H Leaders Conference from Burlington Railroad Company for her service as a Flying Fingers Club leader. Forty two bushels of certified cedar oats are distributed to 4 H Pure Seed Club members and farmers as Polk County looks to 1945 with promising yields. Films on plant propagation and growth are shown at local homes and churches during a joint All American Pure Seed and Victory 4 H Club meeting at the extension office. A new 4 H club forms near Shelby with Lysle Hopwood leading and Pure Seed and Weed study set as 1945 projects.
