Soil treatment doubles corn belt crop yields says Wisconsin agronomist
Prof Emil Truog head of UW soils department says cornbelt soils need heavy initial lime and fertilizer to overcome long deficit from exhausting cropping. He cites Wisconsin tests showing four to five tons of lime and 1500 pounds of 0-20-20 per acre. Maintenance follows with half applied before and half after plowing for uniform soil.

Topping Vegetables Saves Food Value
Plant scientists advise trimming tops from root vegetables such as carrots turnips beets parsnips and radishes before refrigeration. Tops pull nutrients from roots during storage so removing them preserves food value and saves space in the vegetable bin. Young roots keep better in the fridge than in an open bin due to drying air.

Crops Grown Without Soil Requires Skill
Hydroponics and chemical farming prove effective on large and small scales only with solid knowledge of plant chemistry. Poorly tended cultures need iron fertilizer salts nitrate of soda potassium sulfate and epsom salts added to water. Start on a small scale as a hobby.
