Editor Ye and replacement writer describe a recent mild weekend, lingering snow, a hospital stay for Ye Editor and companion Lowell Bills, plus a brief field report of ducks near Omaha and a nod to Ducks Unlimited.
Norris Alfred and Lowell Bills underwent surgery at Central City hospital Monday morning. Rita Dawn Shenk was admitted there Friday and dismissed Tuesday. Michael Joe Hahn left Litzenberg hospital Friday. Orlie Miller and Elwood Tewell were admitted to York General hospital. Mrs. Wilfred Stephens and Mrs. Glen Babcock discharged from Osceola and Central City hospitals respectively. Mabel Shostrom remains at Bryan Memorial hospital in Lincoln.
The Polk County Spelling Contest held at Jeffrey Elementary School Osceola drew 153 spellers from grades three to eight with all county schools represented. Layne Hanquist third grader and Ann Otte fifth grader both placed third. Jill Newcomer Stromsburg, the county champion, will compete at the Midwest Spelling Bee in Omaha on April 18.
Seven Polk High School students took part in the District Dramatics Festival at Peru College. The event drew its largest crowd yet with strong staging and lighting. Awards went to Aria Da Capo by John Reckner and Gail Giles for one act, Joan Sandell for Oral Interpretation of Prose, Jean Larkin for Interpretative Public Address, and Eric Otte earning superior in Extemporaneous Speaking and Ri Kenneth Saidi as the dramatics coach.
Mr and Mrs Orlie Miller celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary and Orlie’s 60th birthday on Thursday March 19. About 40 relatives and friends gathered at their home for an evening of games and refreshments prepared by Geraldine Keali her Elaine Miller and Wilma Miller.
With the boss sidelined, proper estimates were not made for advertising space this week. A "Quitting Business" ad from Brazda Farm and City was turned down for lack of space, and many news items were held over to next week.
The first quarter ends with 2.66 inches of moisture. January records 1.22 inches, February adds 1.15 from two snowfalls, and March brings 1.25 inches with 1.07 from rain and snow plus .18 in early month.
Students from 162 Nebraska high schools gathered at Kearney State College for the 34th annual inter high school contest. About 2,600 competitors set a attendance record as Polk schools placed in the upper half overall. Wayne Heiden finished 3rd of 127 in world geography. Dennis Stevens 22nd of 130 in general science.
Arthur Eckdahl 56 of Scottsbluff was killed Thursday morning March 19 when his semi truck plunged into a 200 foot canyon on Ash Hollow Hill seven miles east of Lewellen. Sheriff Loyd cited blowing snow and poor visibility. Eckdahl had 40,000 pounds of freight and worked for Pacific Intermountain Express. he earned a safe driving award after 26 years without an accident.
The Polk Community Chorus presented the sacred cantata Hallelujah What a Savior by John W Peterson at the high school Sunday evening. A 35 voice choir directed by Mrs William Pinkernell performed with Linda Myers on accompaniment. Narrator Wilbur Whitacre and soloists Mrs Walter Nielsen Mrs Dean Samuel son Rev William Pinkernell Mrs Jim Lindburg John Nyberg Delores Willits Dean Lindburg and Mrs Eldon Johnson supported the program.
Mr and Mrs Alton Driewer of Bradshaw celebrate their silver wedding anniversary with an open house at the Zion School parlors from 2 to 5 pm on April 5. Friends and relatives are invited without further invitation.
Eight ladies and one visitor met despite bad weather at Mrs. R. C. Werner’s home for the Homemakers Society. They voted to send ten dollars to the Nebraska Children’s Home for Easter and planned a meeting with Mrs. Vergil Bush on April 15. Lunch featured St Patrick decor and green candles.
Mr. and Mrs. Lee Bayers hosted Mr. and Mrs. Orlie Miller for dinner in Grand Island and enjoyed a home show that evening. Earlier, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Coover were supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Burdette Flodman on Friday evening.
The Polk County Farm Bureau annual banquet is set for March 31 at 7 p.m. in the Osceola Methodist Church basement with Bernie Camp of the Nebraska Farm Bureau Federation as speaker. Music by Polk and Butler County Farm Bureau members. Tickets from Osceola office or Ben Peterson Polk Oscar Imm Silver Creek Ansel Fredrickson Stromsburg. Public invited.
The Polk Garden Club met at Mrs. Harold Bedie’s home on Tuesday March 17 with 15 members. Members discussed placing plants along Main Street and baskets on Maid Street, and shared lessons on common garden mistakes.
During Library Week April 12 18 readers are urged to visit. The library also opens Saturday night from 7 to 9 p m. New arrivals include four children's books four Bob Moran titles for boys and three for teenage girls plus additional titles.
The Evangelical Free church hosted a banquet on March 21 with seventy three mothers and daughters dining self prepared meals served by men. Decor featured pastel tables and handmade rainbow Easter bonnet favors. Pattern envelopes with living themed instructions were at each place setting. Alice Jones spoke as guest. prizes honored Oldest Mother Betty Ang Youngest Mother Dick Harless and others including Jane Pinkernell and Rose Nyerg as grandmothers with the most grandchildren.
