The writer recalls a nervous but comic hospital stay after deciding to undergo repairs in a private region. They arrive late, leave for coffee, return sober, endure enemas, receive an arm shot, and undergo an operation with some groggy relief. Messages from visitors improve morale, and a vow to send hospital cards is made.
Mr and Mrs Walter Binford received word of the sudden death of Mrs Mary Rusch Knode at Hax tun Colorado. Mrs Knode 47 was killed in a car accident. The Rusch family lived south of Polk several years ago.
The closing session of the study series met Tuesday at Mrs. Mervin Samuels home with Mrs. Samuels teaching Teaching Toward Christian Perfection by Olive Wyon. Members reported on supplementary books and devotionals and observed a Good Friday Quick Time with nineteen ladies reading or devotions. A full report was sent to Conference Secretary Mrs. Russell Brown in Trumbull.
Mrs. C. Marvin Fredrickson attended the TCW Club gathering at the Ronald Sarow home near Swede Home. Dinner guests at the Oscar Sundberg home included multiple local families from Adams Sutton and Central City. Several ladies joined a Palmar music festival, and visitors called on the Ron Heiden home.
The annual village and school board election will be held Tuesday April 7. Polls open in the Hotel lobby. Three village board seats and two school board seats are up for election.
Keene Hueftle, son in law of Mr and Mrs Paul Stevens, has a two page feature in the April issue of Outdoor Life with six color photos recounting an encounter with a cougar. He killed the animal with a bow and arrow during a hunting trip with a friend at Owyhee Nevada. The Hueftles work on an Indian reservation with Mrs Hueftle teaching home economics and Mr Hueftle serving as a counselor to high school youth.
The National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test was given to fourteen named juniors under Mr. Nielsen as the first step toward national merit funding set for 1965. The three hour exam measures educational development and guides college decisions and fields of study. Scores are shared with high schools to aid planning. The participants were Marlene Cooper Linda Eisler Steven Flodman Karen Funk Dee Willits Bonnie Carlson Pat Ramsey Carol Stromberg Connie Jones Barbara Glasser Dee Anderson Gary Johnson Judy OWalk OShea and Lorrain Recknor.
The calendar notes gatherings for April include Oddfellows on Thursday the 2nd, School Board on Monday the 6th, Polk Village Board and Polk Woman's Club on Tuesday the 7th, LEA on Wednesday the 8th, and Rebekahs on Thursday the 9th.
The school held a March 18 pre spring concert featuring the Beginning Band performing Faith of Our Fathers Dick and Jane Merry Widow Waltz and Puppet Parade. David Stromberg and Diane Tenniges played a trumpet duet The Battle Hymn of the Republic. Junior Band performed Prelude Nancy Lee Waltz Every Man for Himself Stage Band played Undecided and All or Nothing at All Senior Band closed with Pride of the Pacific El Matador Tribute to Glenn Miller and Bandology.
Army Pfc. Walter C. Holtorf of Hordville Neb onn march 10 was assigned to the 5803d Engineer Supply Detachment HQ I Corps in Korea. A supply clerk he entered the Army in March 1963 after basic at Fort Leonard Wood Mo. The 24 year old is a 1957 Hordville High School graduate.
Three Polk high school students Vickie Bjerrum Lynda Van Ostrand and Myrna Merchant received awards from Wayne State College for typing tests at semester end. Among 1140 test takers only 125 awards were handed out, with Polk entries placing three of nineteen in the field.
Thirty five Polk students contributed entries to this year’s Conference Music Festival held at Palmer on March 24. Entries included solos small groups glee clubs mixed chorus and band evaluations will influence eligibility for the District Music Contest in Clarkson later April.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Rodine mark their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house on April 12 from 2 30 to 4 30 p m at St Pauls Lutheran Church in Osceola. They request no gifts.
Fatimah Olia of Teheran spoke to Polk fourth through ninth graders yesterday. She demonstrated Iranian language, alphabet of thirty two letters, and school tracks in Iran including Technical, Mathematics or Natural Science. She contrasted Iran's exam based college entrance with American broader high school curriculum. Miss Olia, weekend guest of Janice Anderson, attends Wesleyan University in Lincoln.
Mr and Mrs Richard Anderson welcomed a son born Sunday at Central City Hospital weighing 7 pounds 15 ounces. Mrs Anderson formerly sladys Jensen of Central City.
Mrs. Larry Killion hosted an Easter breakfast Sunday morning for the junior Sunday School Department of the Baptist Church. Guests, teachers and pupils, gathered around a table with a white cross centerpiece and egg savers wearing Easter bonnets. Devotions were led by Winnie Lind with scripture, prayer, Bible choruses and a flannel-graph message.
The Young Democratic Clubs of Nebraska hold their bi ennial convention in Omaha on April 18 at the Prom Diplomat Motor Inn. Del Swigart of Omaha is convention chairman and Congressman Rom Pu cinski of Illinois will address the banquet.
Vern Eklund, who ran the Co-op gas delivery service at Polk for nine years, will start operating a filling station at Bradshaw formerly known as the Bjerrum station on the north edge of Bradshaw on the highway. Rodney Johnson replaces him on the Co-op delivery truck.
Polk High School alumni committee for the 50th anniversary booklet requests old photos from 25 or more years ago. Group pictures of dramatics, picnics, or other activities may be used and shown in a downtown store window during the alumni banquet. Label photos with year and place, names of individuals, and sender's name for return. Deliver to Progress office this week.
Norris Alfred and Lowell Bills were discharged from Litzenberg Memorial hospital in Central City last Saturday. Clarence Bodine went home in Polk Sunday after four weeks in Bryah Memorial hospital in Lincoln. Edna Stankel returned home Monday from Central City hospital after a several day stay.
Lyle Dornburgh, manager of Farmers Oil Co op at Polk, attended a March 23 27 short course at the CCA School of Cooperation in Kansas City Missouri. The program is run at CCA's new training center and is sponsored by the Consumers Cooperative Association serving about 1748 locals including Farmer's Union Co op Oil Assn where Dornburgh serves as manager.
An informative meeting on the Watershed controversy is announced for Polk on April 22. The notice appears in the Advertisers section along with other local ads and business promotions.
