Shiela O'Shea Named State Homemaker Honor Mention

Shiela O'Shea won the 1971 Polk High School Homemaker title and earned an honorable mention in the state contest. She ranks among the top five homemakers in the state from a field of 7,476 senior girls across 352 high schools. Judy O'Shea, her sister, was Polk High School Homemaker in 1965.

Polk students offered optional TB tests on April 20

Grades 1 6 and 9 students and staff may take tuberculin tests administered by the State Health Department on Tuesday April 20 at the school. Consent forms were sent home and are requested back even if parents decline the test.

Gary Stohl Named West Coast SMS Installation Director

Gary G. Stohl formerly from Polk has been appointed Los Angeles Installation Director for Shared Medical Systems Corporation. He will direct a team of Installation Directors on the West Coast as SMS, based in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, expands hospital computing services. Stohl now resides in Playa del Rey, California.

Community Chorus Practice and Local Visits Noted

Community Chorus rehearses Sunday at 2 30 PM in the high school gym. Alvina Lind visited the Merle LaVelle home Monday afternoon. Families Widgs and Frances Widgs traveled to Lincoln for lunch with Sydney Widga and attended a recital where Sydney played a trombone solo. Walter Nelson visited Mary Salchow in Central City hospital Saturday evening. Ron Champoux of Omaha visits mother Ethel Ostrander this week. Vance Stohl of Lincoln spent the weekend with his parents Walter and Nettie Carlson and Ellsworth visited Wallace Lind Sunday evening.

Ernie Lott 82 Dies After Hospital Visit

Ernie Lott aged 82 died at Osceola hospital Tuesday around 10 pm after being taken there an hour earlier by the Polk Rescue Unit. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the medical facility.

Former Teacher Dies in California

Mrs Orin Purvis died Wednesday March 17 in Los Angeles after an extended illness. She taught briefly in Polk schools many years ago under the name Elsie Lobaugh and was a sister of Wilbur Whitacre of Polk.

Polk Spelling Contest Announces County Winners

Lori Hanquist of Polk finished second in the fifth and sixth grade division at Osceola on March 20. In the seventh and eighth grade group Janet Kamporitz of Shelby won first and will go to the Midwest Spelling Bee in Omaha on April 24. Lori Hanquist advances to the district contest in Fairbury on April 1.

Baptists Dedicate New Church Furnishings

A dedication service at the First Baptist Church in Polk on March 14 marked the installation of new blue green carpet and padded pews from February 18 and two weeks later. Rev. Paul Lundgren of the Great Plains Baptist Conference delivered the message. The choir performed Eternal Life and Maurice Lindburg gave a brief history of prior furnishings while Bob Merchant read scripture and Wallace Sandell offered the dedicatory prayer.

Orian Jerner Funeral Held in Lincoln

Orlan Jerner former Polk resident died in Lincoln last week and his funeral was held Monday. He was a brother in law of Wilbur Whitacre of Polk. Attending the services were Mr and Mrs Ralph Johnson of Stromsburg and Mr and Mrs Wilbur Whitacre.
