Polk County Spelling Winners Named at Osceola
The Polk County spelling contest at Jeffrey Elementary School in Osceola named winners in fifth through eighth grades. First place went to Ann Otte and Steven Hollister topped seventh and eighth grade contestants, with April Walgren the alternate. Winners advance to Seward district on April 6. Hollister will also attend the World-Herald Midwest Spelling Bee in Omaha.

Polk Garden Club met March 16 with 11 members and 3 guests at Abbie Green's. Edna Neeman presided as members discussed summer projects while sharing weather signs practice. Florence Hoffman and Nell Peterson led a hotbeds and starting seeds lesson. Lunch was served.

Auxiliary Members Thank Veterans Hospital for Cherry Tray Favors
The American Legion Auxiliary met March 15 after school in the Legion Hall. A thank you note from the Veterans Hospital in Grand Island was read for Cherry Tray favors. Members then played Bingo and were served lunch by Beulah Widga and Fern Myers.

Seniors Plan Advanced Work After Graduation
For 13 years the 28 members of the Senior Class have worked toward graduation and the goal they are nearing. Many plan further education with 12 seeking college training, 10 staying in Nebraska colleges and 2 out-of-state, two in business colleges, two to Milford trade school, one aiming to be a medical technician, one a barber, and one a beauty operator. Others have been accepted and some are still deciding which school to attend.

Track season opens March 29 with returning lettermen
Twenty six boys have reported to the conditioning and track program this year. Six lettermen return from last season including Sherman Wilshusen sprints Dennis Widga pole vault Dick Mundt hurdles Richard Brockevelt Donald Hanquist 880 and Dennis Sealey hurdles. A large group of prospects and a 1965 schedule follow with meets across Polk County and nearby towns plus district and state events. Larry Cramer from Polk attends a basic petroleum short course in Kansas City sponsored by Consumers Co operative Association.

Home Society Club Easter Favors and Donation
Mrs. Mervin Shenk hosted the Home Society Club on Wednesday March 17 with eight members present. The group voted to send ten dollars to the Nebraska Children's Home in Omaha and crafted Easter favors for the children. Ree Johnson received the hostess gift and an all hostess lunch followed. The correspondent and husband delivered the favors Sunday and toured the home, which currently houses eight boys and ten girls. IOOF Mid Nebraska District meeting was March 18 with Grand Master Wayne Colgrove as main speaker.

Legion members and visitors gathered Tuesday evening March 16 for a 46th birthday observance. Twenty seven attendees included Dean Myers Corinne Adelson honored for high scores. Lyle Widga Fern Myers low scorers with Widga winning the traveling prize. Auxiliary ladies served pie and coffee.

Died in Arizona Ralph Shaffer Was Former Holland Furnace Manager
Ralph Shaffer died in Green Valley Arizona on March 18 after poor health. He previously managed Holland Furnace Co in Grand Island and was a brother-in-law of Mrs. Oscar Jones. He and his wife Mildred moved to Arizona recently. Arborville Community Club met March 18 at Mrs. Herschel Shenk’s home with two guests. attendees did handwork and shared lunch.
