Mrs Ollie Johnson traveled to Denver to visit her sister and family Mr and Mrs James Dryden. Mrs Amanda Anderson of Stromburg visited cousin Mrs Ella Shenk for several days. Mrs Ruth Green of Centralite was a Friday overnight guest of Mrs Shenk.

Albert G. Johnson born July 4 1874 Polk County Nebraska died March 11 1951 at Soldiers and Sailors Home Grand Island Nebraska age 76 8 7. He served overseas 1918 1919 muster out Camp Dodge Iowa and was an American Legion member. Survived by five brothers and many nieces and nephews. Funeral March 14 Brauer funeral home conducted by Rev Paul W Walker with military service by local American Legion at Swede Plain cemetery.

Mother of Polk Man Dies in Aurora

Mrs Frances Orendorff mother of Leonard Orendorff died Thursday March 15 at her Aurora home. She was 84 and long time resident of Aurora and Hamilton county. Her husband preceded her in death 14 years ago. Eight children were present for services at St Marys Church Aurora and burial followed in Aurora cemetery.

Box Social Raises Funds For Camp Comeca at Swede Plain Church

The MYF hosted a Swede Plain Church box social on Monday March 12 with a program featuring Iola Church and Marie Lavelle, W. W. Norton of Osceola, Jack Lavelle, Wallace Lind, and Jimmie Adelson. Auctioneer Lennis Lind led box auctions in church parlors after lunch, netting a neat sum for Camp Comeca.

Swede Plain WSCS Holds March Meeting

The Swede Plain WSCS March gathering met in the church parlors on Wednesday afternoon March 14. Mrs. Paul Coover led the devotionals, a skit on Yelam was presented by Mrs. Lloyd Widga, Mrs. Phillip Johnson and Mrs. Walter Stohl, and organ and vocal solos were performed by Mrs. Willard Adelson and Mrs. Walter Stohl. Hostesses were Mrs. Lloyd Lind and Mrs. Russell Fjell who served lunch.

Community Chorus Third Annual Sacred Music Concert

Polk community chorus presented its third sacred music concert at the High School Auditorium drawing a large audience despite snow. Under Miss Leota Sneed director and Miss Phyllis Behrens accompanist the 70-voice choir performed with solos by Mrs. Eldon Johnson Floyd Merchant Dorothy Dahlin Alton Wilhelms and Kenneth Bedient. Special numbers by the Women’s Sextette and Men’s Quartet were praised. A free will offering was collected.

Peace Education Project names Rev Earle Eaton

Rev E Earle Eaton pastor at Arborville Congregational church and vice president of the York County Christian Education Council was named by the American Friends Service Committee to a special Peace Education Project at Des Moines. He will work with Congregationalists nationwide and Nebraskans of all faiths. Eaton has long been linked with Friends and with Drake University and Nebraska Central College.

March Meeting of Legion Auxiliary Highlights Plans

American Legion Auxiliary met at the Legion Hall with Mrs. Davis presiding. Lauretta Neuhaus reported 100 pounds of carpet rags sent to Grand Island and the group planned a trip to visit the Soldiers and Sailors Home for carpet buying and a program at the Veterans Hospital. Sewing day for pillows and fawns is set for March 27, and a joint program for the hospital visit is planned. Beverly Bills performed trombone solos and lunch followed with spring and Easter decor.

Polk School News: Regents Exams and Grade Highlights

James Klingsporn and Richard Rosno took Regents examinations. Second grade studies a new social studies book Under the Roof and learned about a square meal. Fourth grade completed a dictionary study on syllables and diacritical markings. Sixth grade social studies begins Germany and Renaissance topics, with pep club support during the tournament.

Poleites Return From Southern Trip

Mr and Mrs Irvin Anderson and Mr and Mrs Glenn Hill returned last week from a vacation to Florida and points south crossing the Mississippi at Memphis. They visited Warm Springs and the Little White House meeting Daisy Bonner and viewing Okefenokee Refuge and Land of Trembling Earth. They toured St Augustine and its oldest sites, Miami glass bottom boat trip, Bok Tower at Lake Wales and the sunken gardens of St Petersburg. Rex Allen's reptile institute at Silver Springs and his snake handling were noted. Temperatures reached 90 degrees with profuse flowers. Travel exceeded 5000 miles on the trip.

Chester drops Cubs at state tourney meet

In Class D action at the state tournament Polk High Cubs fell 54 to 41 to Chester. Chester’s 6'2" plus forwards controlled under the boards as Cubs captain John Holmes fouled out early. Mac Gleim stood out for Polk with strong offense and defense, but the Cubs could not overcome the height disadvantage.

Polk Plans City Sponsored Midget Baseball Team

Polk will support a midget baseball club in the Polk County League with Shelby Osceola and Stromsburg. Eligible players must be under 16 before January 1 1951. Practices open to all. games limited to twelve on Fridays from late May to August 10 with a hoped for sponsored manager and uniforms though limited supply.

Polk Boys Dominate All-Tournament Team Selection

In Silver Creek district Class D play eight teams competed with Polk sending three players to the all-tournament first team. Chapman and Silver Creek each had a player, while Polk also placed two guards. Notable runners-up included Don Anderson of Marquette and Merlyn Fowler of Hordville. The Albert Reed Auction Sale was postponed to Saturday March 24.

Polk Teachers Re elected by Board of Education

The Polk Board of Education announced contracts have been sent to all teachers for the 1951 52 school year. Carl Johnson the 7th and 8th grade trade teacher is the only exception as he will be inducted into service in June.

American Legion Auxiliary Hosts Hard Times Party on 42nd Anniversary

The American Legion Auxiliary held a Hard Times party in honor of the Legion's 42nd anniversary on Friday night March 16. About 45 members and guests attended, with two birthday cakes, singing of Happy Birthday, and prize awards for best hard time costumes won by Laurette Neuhaus and Trof Ostberg. Mrs Frank Davis presented a picture to the Legion, accepted by Bob Baack, followed by cards and a late lunch.
