Polk Commercial Club Revives Community Band This Summer

The Polk Commercial Club plans a summer revival of a community band with town leaders coordinating through the Town Board School Board and a musician soliciting committee led by Oscar Sundberg Mrs Frank Davis and Lloyd Kroger Concerts are expected on Wednesday evenings this summer The musicians committee will seek players and determine band size and personnel A softball program will also be organized with Tuesday evening games led by Clarence Bolton Dean Myers and Alton Wilhelms A midget baseball team is to be formed by Eldon Johnson Ralph Kahler and Nick McNaught with Merle Stromberg directing the summer schedule and district petitions for schooling updates noted

Heart Fund Drive Completes Donations From Polk and Community

The Heart Fund Drive by the American Legion Auxiliary raised 139.01 this year with strong support from local groups and businesses. Notable contributions came from House to House 326.18, Business District 38.8, and Amer Legion 25.00, among others.

Eugene Kingsporn Returns Home From Korea War Service

Eugene Kingsporn arrived home Sunday evening after receiving separation papers at Camp Carson Colorado. He spent many months in the Korean war zone and was welcomed at the home of his parents Mr. and Mrs. Ewald Kingsporn.

W C T U Poster Contest Promotes Anti Smoking

The W C T U sponsored a poster contest on Effects of Cigarettes with 35 entries all deemed good. Pancakes Draw Crowd at Polk County Coop Feed

Between 950 and 1000 people attended the Polk County Coop Pancake Feed at the Osceola High School Auditorium. Greer Lesser of Hampton led the main cooking with 25 directors assisting from 5 to 8 p.m. A menu of pancakes sausages and coffee was served along with syrup flour eggs and other supplies. KRVN Radio provided entertainment and the event was sponsored by multiple Polk County agricultural and cooperative groups including ABA Farm Bureau Farmers Union and Coop associations. Out of town guests included leaders from Lincoln Kansas City and Aurora among others.

Frank Anderson 87 dies in Lincoln nursing home

Frank Anderson aged 87 died Monday evening at Hammer's Nursing Home in Lincoln. He is survived by six children including Mrs. W. J. Widga Mrs. Richard Widga Mrs. Ludwig Widga and three sons in Rockford Illinois George Clarence and Herbert. Funeral services set for this afternoon at 2 o'clock at Evangelical Free Mission Church in Polk.

Served in US Army fourteen months overseas discharged June 2 1919. Worked as lineman then barber in Omaha Polk Nebraska married Nellie Putman Harless October 22 1922. Joined Polk Methodist Church at 41. Entered Veterans Hospital Grand Island November 6 1952 until death. Survived by wife sister Francis Skinner Hardville brothers Anton Nelson Sut tom Nels Nelson North Dakota many nieces and nephews. Polk Grade Team Wins Conference Basketball Title

Polk Grade Coach John Sweenie led the Cubs to the Goldenrod Conference crown by beating Stromsburg 32 30 in overtime. LeMar Lind scored 11 for Polk, with Gary Skaden also 11 and Leon Johnson and Bruce Johnson adding five each. Silver Creek defeated Osceola in the consolation game.

American Legion Auxiliary Essay Winners Named at March Meeting

The American Legion Auxiliary held its March meeting in the Legion Hall. Sondra Hill won first and Allen Ziegelbein second in the essay contest, Rosalie Nelson's grade contest entry scored 60, and Fern Myers reviewed legislative bulletins. A gift fund for the community hall was set up, a Korean boys memorial book for Polk Library planned, a Girl's State attendee to be chosen, a hospital nurse gift arranged, $5 donated to the Red Cross, and March 17 marked the 34th Legion birthday victory with a pot luck lunch.

Local Rebekah Lodge Hosts Rising City Visit

Nine to ten members of the local Rebekah lodge met with Rising City lodge members Monday evening. Mrs. George Stever presented the traveling emblem. A comedy skit by Mines Bessie Williams Mildred Dornburgh Esther Larson and Mildred Teegerstrom was performed followed by a reading by Mrs. Iva Cramer. Lunch was served by the hostess lodge.
