Olive McBeth county superintendent of schools and county teachers will present two or three puppet plays at Swede Plain. The event targets all ages with both worship and preaching services and a Sunday School session following. Community members are urged to attend.
Divine services with holy communion at 10:30 a m next Sunday at the Luther Church. Midweek Lenten services at Town Hall Wednesday at 8 pm. Radio Lutheran Hour airs at 3:30 pm. Methodist Church offers Sunday School 10 am worship 11 am and 7 30 pm service with board meeting Monday. Choir practice Thursday and Easter Cantata planning. Parents urged to bring children to morning worship during Lent. Visitors welcome.
L J Mentzingo leads Sunday School at 19 A. M. Morning Worship at 31 A. M. Y P M S scheduled for 6 45 P. M. at the church with a Sunday program for all members and seekers.

Osceola resident Mr. Humphrey reported by Am erican Red Cross official Mr. Baker that Polk County ranks second to Douglas County in Nebraska for highway first aid stations. Nebraska holds sixth place overall with 44 stations statewide as of January 1 1938. Baker praised county efforts by volunteer firemen Boy Scouts Osceola Swimming Pool and other groups and urged expanding first aid through schools following a 1935 home inspection campaign that reduced accidents.
Union Pacific agent N. E. McNeely says effective March 14 freight through the Grand Island Valparaiso branch will be one train daily except Sunday. No 765 morning freight runs Monday Wednesday Friday. No 765 evening freight runs Tuesday Thursday Sunday. Diminished business prompts the cut. crops and conditions may restore service later. Osceola and Stromsburg agents lose assistants March 11 with extended hours.
Polk earned state tourney eligibility by beating Rising City in the district final at Benedict. They opened with a 30 17 win over Atkinson, then fell to Dorchester 26 21 as the Dorchester squad prevailed in Lincoln last week. Polk earned respect from local fans.
The Pleasant Hill Mission Circle will meet Wednesday afternoon March 28 at 2:00. Mrs. Will Johnson and Mrs. Hjalmar Shostrom will be hostesses. Rev. H. E. Ude of Omaha, District Superintendent of the American Sunday School Union will speak on the work.
Rev William Park executive secretary of the Nebraska State Baptist Convention will speak at the Baptist Church Sunday evening at 7 30 PM He has held his present post a year and is a veteran pastor in the state with rich pastoral experience to share his message
Mr and Mrs Carl Wilshusen planned a pleasant surprise party for daughter Dolores Mae to honor her 14th birthday. Guests included Mildred Keuper Berniece Blase Louise Wilshusen Marjorie Mundt Junior Waak Erwin Blase Melbourn Maderow Julia Ann Smith and other friends. Irene Wilshusen assisted with contests and games as a luncheon with lit candles was served.

West Sids Swede Home Farmers Union hosts a social on Friday March 25 with a good program and all are welcome. Various local residents, including Mrs. Liberty Toline, the Johnsons, and the Fredricksons, share visits and hospitality. The Swede Home Ladies Club and Luther League plan meetings, Old Song Service, and family involvement with nearby towns in the weekend roster.
A 64th birthday gathering was held at Mrs. Wim Kisler’s home on Sunday with relatives from Grand Island Hastings and Marquette attending. On Monday evening additional family members joined for further celebration and a luncheon was served to self-invited guests.
Mrs Rebecca Lohr Hewitt born October 1 1865Summerset Pa died March 9 1938 Polk aged 72 years 5 months 8 days She moved to Nebraska in 1872 married Con Hewitt in 1882 They had four children two sons and two daughters with two predeceased The living children are Mrs W C Steele Polk and Con M Hewitt Jr Philadelphia She joined United Brethren Church in 1885 and was active until death Funeral held at United Brethren Church York officiated by Rev A P Vannice and Emanuel Reece Burial in York Cemetery
Plans finalize for the Fourth District Nebraska Federation of Women’s Clubs convention to meet in Stromsburg April 19 and 20 hosted by the Women’s Civic Improvement Club. Bessy Gerhardt Morrison will headline with a banquet and tea planned. the Commercial Club aids in preparation. The event includes a concert by the Kearney State Normal Symphony Orchestra and housing arrangements by the Women’s Club.
The Young People of the Tree Mission Church will present an interesting program next Friday evening with the public invited. Christie s Old Organ will be the story presented by LaVerna Ang, interspersed with several special musical numbers.
Einer Swanson of Stromsburg is converting the Gilbert property in east Osceola into a tile factory. The old ice house becomes the plant and the residence an office with four to six workers planned as road building demand grows.
The Twentieth Century Club met at Mrs. Mervin Shenk's home with 9 members and 4 visitors. Election of officers elected Mrs. Walter Green as club president. Mrs. Gertrude Flick spoke on A lesson in Arithmetic. Refreshments were served. Social visits and district school program noted along with several local home visits and dinners.
William Anson Hammond born April 17 1863 Bentonville Indiana died February 27 1938 Portland Oregon age 74 years 10 months 10 days. Survived by daughter Louise Taylor Polk granddaughter Ann Louise Taylor son Charles W Kendall Central City brother Chas E Hammond Connersville Indiana and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held in York with Rev. R M Bailey of Polk officiating.
Sophie Peterson born in Sweden June 3 1868 died March 10 1938 at Polk Nebraska after living in Minneapolis Buffalo and Hordville. She married P A Hanquist in 1922 and lived in Polk fifteen years cared for her mother fourteen years. She was active in Covenant Mission and Swedish Baptist churches and remembered for kindness hospitality and faith. Survived by husband sister brothers nieces nephews and many friends.
Velma Cline daughter of Mr and Mrs W D Cline of Polk formerly of Aurora married Festin Omel son of Mr and Mrs Armond Omel of Giltner in a March 6 ceremony at the bride’s parents home Rev Porter of Aurora officiated in a small gathering Nora Mae Cline played Lohengrin’s wedding march The bride wore rose crepe and talisman roses and the couple were attended by Norma Johnson and Earl Cline A two course luncheon followed the ceremony which marked the 30th wedding anniversary of the bride’s parents Republican Register Aurora.

The supreme court upholds Utica's occupation tax on bakery products sold wholesale by truck. Dale Rumelin, driver for Smith Baking of Lincoln, argued the $25 daily fine was excessive and denied a jury trial. The court ruled the fine based on noncompliance and that city ordinance prosecutions are civil actions.
Martha Annie Limp born near Wickliff Indiana October 1 1891 died March 12 1938 age 46 at Crawford County public schools. She joined Wickliff Methodist Church Christmas 1912 and lived a faithful Christian life. In May 1931 she married Charles W Miller of Clark Nebraska and remained there. Survived by husband mother sisters and brothers and many relatives. Funeral March 16 at 2:00 pm in Wickliff Methodist Church officiated by Rev E I Pengelly.
