Hagood removed as army commander in routine order

A War department order relieves Maj. Gen. Hagood from command at Fort Sam Houston and directs him to return home to await orders. The move follows Hagood's blunt testimony before a House appropriations committee criticizing New Deal spending and housing for soldiers, provoking political firestorms and a debate over military discipline versus free expression. Hagood, 64 next year, is expected to retire from active service.
