Polk merchants prepare for a Saturday dollar day sale in partnership with the Commercial Club. Nearly all stores will stay open late to handle expected crowds with goods marked far below cost and additional specials beyond one dollar. The city anticipates strong shopper turnout and urges reading this week's Progress advertisements to save real money.
The M. E. Missionary Society met at Mrs P J Garten's home last Thursday with Miss Lizzie Johnson as devotional leader. Mrs L M Sundberg led the Founders Day program and a solo by Mrs Pengelly honored deceased members. Members listed include Mrs Alice Benjamin Mrs Co B Putman Mrs W A Stevens and Mrs Albion Lindquist.
Osceola P A Nelson won five dollars for submitting the best fire risk photograph for the Dwelling House Insurance Company of Lincoln. Nelson, local company agent, photographed the courthouse to earn the prize. Lincoln telephone crews begin rerouting toll lines from Stromsburg to Osceola with extensive pole and wire work due to the project. Foreman H. Moss leads the Lincoln Contraction Department crew, targeting completion by May 5. Andrew E. Nquist and Neva Hastings are noted for family events and medical histories. Fifty sheriffs and deputies visit Osceola for a district meeting, not crime related.
Donald Johnson of Omaha and family visited here with his parents over the weekend. Velma Weed returning from Denver. Axel Johnson hosted C C Bodine family in Valparaiso. Ernest Campbell of Fullerton visited his parents. Pillison of Hampson guests at Bill Erickson home. Neighborly Neighbors Extension Club met at Art Carlson home. Mrs H M Campbell left for Cheyenne with Burt Nicholson to visit sister. Nybergs and Phillip Nyberg of Osceola visited Emil Stranberg for his thirtieth wedding anniversary dinner. Carl Dose of Polk was Sunday evening guest.
Myr and Mrs Alfred Gustafson celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary at their Polk home last Saturday with lunch for immediate family and an after noon open house. They were married March 7 1886 in Merrick County Nebraska and later farmed in Hamilton County before moving to Polk in 1922.
Congressman Binderup reports 30 million dollars available for feed and seed loans aiding farmers. A House debate leads to impeachment for Federal Judge Ritter, who will stand trial in the Senate. Tax measures aim at corporate surpluses and a possible excise on processes, with Ways and Means to report later. The Red Rider DC school ban prompts debate.
The Elijah Gove Chapter D A R held its March meeting Tuesday afternoon at Mrs A V Eielson's home with Mrs A B Hedblooom assisting. An interesting program followed the business session and refreshments were served. Local students Harold Beckman Jr Max Shrike and Leland Johnson visited family in Lincoln and Omaha over the weekend. Mr and Mrs Ivan Bengtson and the Orendorffs made weekend visits to Hordville Central City and Elmer Hearing. Polk city bought a new road maintainer expected to improve maintenance.
Nebraska farmers across the state request Clarke McNary seedlings totaling 1 066 900, up from 889 900 last year, with estimates that 1936 plantings may exceed any prior year. Supplies of some varieties, including Chinese elm, are running short, while Burr Oak and Osage Orange remain plentiful. Polk county leads with 17 100 trees ordered, and ten other counties follow with counts ranging from about 20 000 to 26 000 trees.
Polk High School basketball team captures the Class B regional title with a 32 to 23 win over Shelton and a 19 to 17 victory over Henderson. They beat Wood River 20 to ?, earning a fourth straight regional crown and bringing the trophy to Sundberg Hardware windows for display.

A basketball game between Teachers and Preachers and the Commercial Club is set for Monday night in the high school gym. Last week the businessmen edged the teachers 17 to 16. A game between Polk town and Surprise town teams will precede or follow. Admission is modest.
A rural school board and patrons meeting will be held Friday March 13 at the Osceola courthouse, beginning at 1 15 in the afternoon. The program includes music by district pupils, introductions of guest speakers Miss McBeth, talks on board problems, rural inequality topics, and selections by the Liberty Male Quartette and district choirs.
Polk County residents mourn the death of Elmer Ellsworth Stanton age 74 7 months 22 days at his Stromsburg home. Born July 16 1861 in Hocking County Ohio he practiced law in Stromsburg since 1884 with breaks including Hood River Oregon and Chicago. Survived by four children Gertrude Moore Charles E Stanton Hazel M Stanton John T Stanton a stepson and many relatives funeral Thursday at 2 pm with Polk County Bar members attending.
The Baptist Church observed the 400th anniversary of the English Bible during Sunday morning services. The event highlighted the historical impact of the Bible on worship and teaching at the congregation.
Nebraska College of Agriculture announces eleven honey demonstrations across the state in March. Maritta Fischer Jensen, a world renowned honey expert and American Honey Institute representative, will lead sessions on uses of honey in cooking and baking. Demonstrations are sponsored by county agents with the Nebraska Department of Agriculture and Inspection, the American Honey Institute, the Nebraska Honey Producers Association, and the Agricultural College Extension Service.
Mrs Clara Hernbloom 93 longtime Polk County resident died after several months illness. Funeral from Eden Baptist Church Stromsburg with Rev W E Hedburg officiating. Interment Stromsburg Cemetery. Survivor list includes four sons William Osceola Walter Stromsburg David Burlington Colorado Fred Omaha and two daughters Mrs Amelia Quillen Polk and Mrs Samuel Dowers California.
The Standard Bearers host a doll show at the Methodist Church parlors on Tuesday evening March 17 at 7 30 pm Everyone is invited to enter a doll for judging by a group of men Prizes will be awarded for the oldest largest and smallest dolls A lunch will be served for ten cents
Polk County legislator J N Norton filed for the Nebraska state legislature seeking the 25th district comprising Polk Hamilton and Clay Counties. In a letter to the paper Norton cites his long service in the Nebraska Legislature Constitutional Convention and U S Congress as credentials for helping the first unicameral session succeed.
Mrs. Robert Nelson expresses heartfelt thanks for the beautiful flowers and cards received during her recent hospital stay.
Agricultural Agent Kelly reports a shortage of Clarke McNary seedlings as 1,228 600 requests flood in for 1936. Chinese elm Russian Olive and Hackberry are exhausted while catalpa ceragana and other varieties run low. Maxwell urges first second and third substitute choices as burr oak osage orange wild plum and most pines remain available. Scotts Bluff leads with 47 100 trees. Adams is second and ten counties follow. About 1 500 000 seedlings may be distributed under the act.
The Commercial Club again hosts Bank Night on Saturday evening in Polk tied to Dollar Day. Ten lucky registrants will win a new dollar. If you participated before, you are already registered. new registrants sign up all day at the Progress Office.

The R. J. Nine family visited Marquette Saturday while Mr. and Mrs. Bowker and Mr. Bowker with Forrest Bowker and Chas Wyatt hosted Sunday dinner at Asa Smith’s home. Jack Rice and daughters Ruth and Roberta Nelson visited Central City on Sunday. Ivy Beardsley and family moved, John Carlson’s farm south of Polk is vacated, and Charles Wyatt family plans new farm residence southeast of the Beardsley property.
A townwide Polk Commercial Club drive names Isaacson as South captain and Dr Westfall as North captain with Leonard Avenue as the dividing line. Members from businesses receive e-cards, March 3 as closing date, and the losing side must host a banquet in coordinated attire, highlighting town cooperation.
Swede Home readers report a flurry of visits and events from Friday to Sunday. Several families, including the Boltons, Ekstroms, Carlsons, and Andersons, hosted or visited kin near Osceola and Stromsburg.
