Polk Public High School announces four students Becky Stevens Ken Bills Mark Albin and Gail Widga named Outstanding Teenagers of America for 1971. Local nominees gain state and national scholarship prospects and the chance to compete for the Teenager of the Year trophy and a $1000 national scholarship.
Final rites for 72 year old Hillis Sterner were held at Arborville Congregational Church with Rev. Lindley Cook. Sterner of York County died Monday morning at Hastings Hospital. He was born October 24, 1898 in Schuyler Nebraska and married Mildred Merchant June 4 1924 in York. Survived by wife Mildred two daughters two sons eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Brian Tyler earned his private pilot license on his 17th birthday February 23. Federal rules require sixteen year olds to solo but must be 17 to hold a license. He trained with John Hruban then completed final instruction with Larry Boardman of Boardman's.
Family and friends gathered Sunday noon at Trinity Lutheran Church to honor Mr and Mrs Max Jones on their 25th wedding anniversary. Attendants included out of town guests from Omaha Filley Milford Scottsbluff Hay Springs and Lincoln.
Polk Woman's Club met at the home of Mrs. Mae Felton on Tuesday March 2. President Jo Strand conducted the business meeting. Our club collect and flag salute were said. Program leaders Mrs. Ruth Aker and Mrs. Mary Stauffer presented Population Explosion. Mrs. Felton and Mrs. Bertha Brazda served lunch to 10 members and 2 guests.
The Polk Community Club will hold its regular monthly meeting Monday evening March 15 in the Community Hall. All members are urged to attend.
The Scouts Blue and Gold Banquet took place March 2 at Polk Community Hall with about 110 attendees including scouts and families. Ron Foote Sr gave the invocation. Matt Nyberg joined as a new member and earned a Bobcat pin. Cub Scouts Billy Blender Condon Shostrom Randy Harless John Foote Jimmy Wurtz received Wolf Bear and Silver Arrow awards. Webern awards were presented to Jerry Wize Scott Werner Kim Blase Scott Hudson Kevin Sandell Curtis Burney. Boy Scout Tenderfoot badges went to Roger Brockevelt Kent Anderson Kelly Adelson and Mark Clymer.
The Hordville Trimmette Tops held their regular meeting March 1 led by Parma Werner. Fourteen members were present for the pledge and song with Shirley Lampshire named Queen of the Week after a 2 percent loss. Officers elected: Parma Werner leader, Nadine Guilford vice leader, Donna Green secretary, Faye Garner treasurer, Sandra DeMers vice treasurer.
Community Chorus meets Sunday at 2 30 P M in the high school gym for practice. Mrs Oscar Sundberg served as Monday afternoon caller for Mrs Emma Horstman.
Second Lieutenant Daniel E. Tyler of the 1st Air Cavalry Division received the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism during a May 12 1970 night resupply mission in the Fishook region of Cambodia. He flew under heavy enemy fire to secure critical ammunition.

Co op Oil Inc held its 44th annual meeting at the Legion Club in Osceola on a Wednesday afternoon. Chairman Oscar Schmid led the session with an invocation by Rev. Richard Odgers. Sales reached 2 024 474 88 with net savings of 100 029 23. Curtis Burggess and Francis Urban were elected to replace retiring directors. Door prizes and lunch followed. the First National Bank of Osceola provided cigars and candy bars.
Janice Schulze placed fourth in the eighth grade division and Cynthia Blase took third in the sixth grade division at the Hamilton County Spelling Contest held March 6 in Aurora. They represent Immanuel Lutheran Day School. Mr and Mrs Lloyd Lind visited Gayln Lind in Axtell on Thursday.
