Polk High Prevails at Hastings College Forensic Meet
Polk High School won first place in the humorous division of the Hastings College forensics tournament among fifteen central Nebraska towns. Cast members included Welcome Willits Maynard Schrader Bernice Wilshusen Lois Cramer Roger Gustafson Elizabeth Smith and Stuart Pengelly. Faculty instructor Miss Dorothy Pearson and student director Floyd Taylor led the group. The play Cabbages was performed on Saturday with Carl Steelquist and Robert Strickland providing transportation. Elizabeth Smith also placed third in the interpretive reading contest Friday.

Alton Werth twenty four, son of Mr and Mrs Henry Werth of the Polk neighborhood, figured in an Omaha auto crash Sunday evening. A fire truck and Werth’s coupe collided as the truck swerved to avoid a head on impact, killing the driver and another fireman. Werth and a companion, plus two other firemen, were hospitalized with non life threatening injuries. Werth recently moved to Omaha and works for an electric appliance company.
