Polk County basketball tourney in Stromsburg last week ended with Stromsburg defeating Osceola for the top prize. Osceola took runner up, while Shelby and Polk also placed in consolation and second team positions.
The Benefit Ball postponed due to bad weather is set for tonight at nine o'clock in the Polk ballroom. Tickets cost 50 cents per couple and may be bought from local merchants or at the door to support a worthy cause.
The Polk Swedes beat Silver Creek 40 to 12 on February 21 as Don Peterson led with 16 points. B Allison M Peterson and Wright contributed solid play. This was the final game before the Central College showdown at home on February 27.
Hope Bailey daughter of Reverend and Mrs Bailey of this city submitted the winning essay on What is a White Elephant for the Home Service Store. The essay defines a White Elephant as something of no use to you but potentially useful to another person who may need it and can be a bargain for the recipient.
The formal opening of Polk's Cold Storage Locker Box System will be held at City Market on Saturday. Patrons may see the locker box in operation and learn its mechanical phases. Free coffee and lunch will be provided, and several fractional prizes will be given away.
The Hazel Mc Owen Company will stage the three act comedy Just A Dance at Viking Hall on Wednesday evening next week with several vaudeville acts. An advance agent said the show must stand on its own and a small admission will be charged.
Henderson, York county champions, meet Osceola, Polk runners up, at 6 30 p m Wednesday March 1 in Stromsburg to begin the District Class B Tournament. Other bracket teams include Utica Silver Creek Shelby Ulysses Rising City Polk Stromsburg Hampton and Marquette. Seeded first round are Henderson Stromsburg Rising City and Silver Creek. Semifinals are Friday and the finals at 8 30 p m Saturday.
On February 16 the Polk Swedes lost a close road game to York 45 43. M Peterson and Allison led the Swedes in scoring while D Peterson and Wright started for Polk. A junior varsity doubleheader follows on February 27 with Polk grades versus Hordville grades at 7 15.
Church listings for Swede Plains with multiple congregations note service times, Sunday School, and special events. Included are M. E. and Lutheran churches with speakers from State Extension and local pastors, along with Free Mission and Free Methodist services and World Day of Prayer activities.
The church lists Sunday School at 10, Morning Worship at 11, Evening Service at 7:30. A church service every Tuesday evening starts this coming Tuesday and continues through Holy Week with daily services Monday to Friday. Choir practice Thursday evenings is requested for all singers and Young People's Forum meets at 6:30.

Swede home hosts the Ollie Johnson family for Sunday dinner at Ansel Fredrickson’s. York sees visits from R J Nine and family. T C W Club plans a February 23 meeting with Mrs Carl Johnson. High Prairie Get Together to meet February 23 evening. Dorcas meets February 25 at 2:00. Osceola visitors include Mrs Mary Jerrell, Mrs Oscar Fredrickson, Mrs Kenneth Peterson, Mrs Axel Fredrickson, and Mrs Myron Johnson at Ansel Fredrickson’s.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Wilshusen celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary at home on Wednesday February 15 with about sixty relatives and friends. Rev Jeurgensen spoke. several Wilshusen family members performed songs including Jesus Savior Pilot Me and What a Friend We Have in Jesus. The group enjoyed a late hour lunch prepared by guests.
Farmers in Polk county prepare to sign nonbinding statements for the 1939 Agricultural Conservation program. ACP chair Robert Taddiken notes acreage allotments mailed to owners and operators. Precinct meetings report four areas signed up with over 300 farmers. Signing deadlines and an outline map showing winter wheat locations are key features.
Miss Loretta Jaax of Shelby organizes the county's first girls 4-H club for 1939. Seven girls enrolled with officers Miss Doris Jaax president and Lois Johnson vice president. The leaders training session is March 7 at Osceola Court House with Mary Nelson from the State Office providing guidance on Girls' Room and Learning to Sew Projects.
Omaha World Herald plans a Sunday rotogravure feature by chief photographer E. K. Langevin. He spent time inside the Nebraska State Penitentiary and captured unprecedented images of inmate life. The eight page series highlights reformatory and hospital institutions and debuts February 28 with a 10 cent Sunday edition. Mr and Mrs RB Williams visited the Crow home that Sunday.
About two hundred Polk County Taxpayers League members met in Osceola to hear an audit survey by Fyrne Williams. The group adopted resolutions opposing higher county levy for the fair and urging cost-cutting, fewer bridges, one county doctor, one hospital, and stricter relief controls. They also urged real property revaluation in 1939 and state aid based on need.
The Ladies Aid of the Methodist Church met February 16 in the church parlors with Mesdames Gus tafson Anderson Hill and Miss Stevens hosting. A Colonial program celebrated Washington and Lincoln birthdays, featuring readings, songs, stories, a piano solo, and a sewing project with Colonial costumes.

Several cases of colds and flu have been reported in the vicinity over the past week causing reduced attendance at schools and churches. The weather swings between cold and warm are blamed for most illnesses and residents are advised to dress warmly and keep feet dry. Walther League met Tuesday with topic You and Your Parents led by W L Kupke aided by Herbert and Bernice Blase. Norman Keuper acted in charge.
The Osceola Community Club and county veterinarians invite farmers to a February 24 forum at Muse Theater Osceola on sleeping sickness Equine Encephalomyelitis. Dr S W Alford and Bill Derrick will explain prevention vaccines and animal nutrition with data from Polk county cases and government reports.
