In 1876 the Ponca Nation faced forced removal from the Niobrara lands to Indian Territory. Chiefs walked home on foot to Nebraska after exile, many died en route or in Oklahoma, Standings Bear led an escape back to Nebraska, and federal court eventually allowed some Poncas to return. Oil wealth later marked a brighter note for many.
