In the vicinity farmers prepare for this year’s wheat harvest. B S Keck, former Polk County legislator and now state highway commissioner, reports the crop as a sight for weary eyes. Harvest is expected to begin late in the week with yields of 20 to 30 bushels.
A quilting bee occurred at the Methodist church parlor on Tuesday afternoon. Residents and visitors shared news from Holdredge to Lincoln including Francis and Mae Doreums visiting Alice Wildman at York hospital and the Horstman vacation in Red Feather Lakes. The article also notes tire ads, a Kroger family reunion at Grand Island, and a Polk county land case affirmed by the supreme court regarding a deed to lands in Polk and Merrick counties.
A group of thirteen girls met at Mrs. E Pengellys home last Wednesday to form the R. G. 8S Club. Elected officers include President Laura Johnson Secretary and Treasurer Welcom Willits and News Reporter Glea Johnson. Sponsors are Mrs Pangelly and Mrs O E Sundberg. Next meeting set for Wednesday June 29 at Glea Johns home.
Polk high school class of 1932 held a Sunday picnic at Aurora Park with out of town guests including Mr and Mrs Harold Carson Central City Mr and Mrs Donnell Springer Lincoln Mr and Mrs Keneth Johnson Aurora Oakley Davis Lincoln Chas Henderson Hastings Don Anderson Irene and Vincent Jones Osceola Riverett Green sent a decorated cake in memory.
The Arborville 4-H Club met at Veridina Stouffer's home with Marcella Burgess assisting. Miss Ethel Flick reported on the Lincoln convention. Visits and gatherings included Mrs. Melvin Schingland with two children, Mrs. Albert Nelson hosting the Community Club, and Evelyn Jackson of Julesburg returning home after visiting local families. Families discussed include the Bedien, Burgess, Perkins, and Pomeroy households. A church ice cream social at Town Hall raised good proceeds. Billie Burgess returned to Albion after a three week stay with Chas Burgess family. New Charleston residents Mr and Mrs Chas Perkins moved. Mr and Mrs Mervin Pomeroy announce a baby boy. Louise Harrington, daughter of the Harringtons, is noted. Donnel Springer and Lincoln visitor Dan Graves also visited Arborville.
Miss Dorothy Falk visits with Lincoln family and returns home. Mr and Mrs Oscar Fredrickson and Mr and Mrs Morris Johnson join John Johnson at Stromsburg for Sunday dinner. Lawrence Lind family and Marvin Fredrickson enjoy a Platte river picnic. Arthur Falk leaves for Mankato Minnesota to lead church duties for the summer. Florence Olson visits Swede Home relatives from Omaha. Ansel Fredrickson and son dine with Elmer Carlson at Stromsburg. Mission Circle meets at Faye Beardsley’s near Polk. Joe Monson travels to Omaha, returns next day. Swede Home mid summer picnic set for church lawn Thursday evening.
Mrs. A. C. Quillen thanks the Polk Fire Department and friends who helped extinguish the fire at the Progress Office Friday evening.
Jr and Mrs G M Hill and Mrs Neva Bright and children of Sterling Colo spent the week end at the Gerald Brownfield home in Lincoln. They attended the wedding of Wallace Johnson and Miss Francis Scherzer in Lincoln on Saturday. The Lincoln Telephone Co managers and staff from Polk Shelby Osceola and Stromsburg had a picnic Friday at the sand pit near Hordville. Clyde Burg of York district manager was there.
A Nelson family reunion gathered 86 members at Buckley Park Stromsburg on Sunday June 21 with baskets and a dinner. Officers elected include Enoch Eckstrand President and Hazel Nelson Secretary Treasurer. The report noted two marriages four births and no deaths. next year the reunion will be at Polk Park.
Osceola reports the engagement of Anna May Myers to Norman E. Bradley of Denver with Myers a Osceola High School graduate. Benedict sees the wedding of Luella Overg to Dr. Robert E. Karrer at Zion Lutheran Church and plans a stay in Omaha. The M B Church Ladies Aid marks its 50th anniversary with a program. Local visits include a Blair trip for a picnic and Ak-Sar-Ben races praise.
The Ladies Missionary Society of the Baptist Church met at the church parlors last Thursday afternoon. Hostesses were Mesdames Ed W Larson Orlie Miller Wm Miller Theo Larson Raymond Sundberg and Rolly Williams. Mrs Bailey led the program and Mrs A B Swanson gave the devotional. Miss Hazel Ballard and Jeanne Wright of York visited at the W J Johnson home Sunday. Miss Evangeline Sealey of Omaha is spending this week in this city visiting relatives.
Mr and Mrs P E Shostrom and their children gathered for the annual reunion at Pawnee Park Columbus on Sunday June 21. A noon dinner was enjoyed followed by social activities and ice cream and cake in the afternoon. Attendees included Mr and Mrs P E Shostrom with Mabie Willie Ruth Marjorie Irene. Mr and Mrs Dana Shostrom with Ruth. Mr and Mrs Henry Shostrom with Marjorie Irene. Mr and Mrs Robert Shostrom with Marlene Darrell Dean. Mr and Mrs Curtis Fledman Wayland Burdette. Carl Peterson Lloyd Lind and Clifford Carlson.
A shower for the recent bride Mrs. Hirold Strand was hosted at her parents Mr. and Mrs. Everett Peterson home on Thursday. Guests played games and enjoyed a two course luncheon served by hostesses Mrs. Underhill and Miss Fern Johnson. The honoree received many gifts.
B. S. Keck, state highway inspector and former Polk County legislator, praises crop prospects and clean corn after a 413 mile drive from Kimbell to Grand Island and Lincoln. He notes winter-killed wheat in the west and commends highway safety, while criticizing counties for not enforcing drunk driving laws.
The Eastern Star held a June picnic at Buckley Park Thursday evening with about seventy five members and families attending. A 6 30 picnic supper was enjoyed. Mr and Mrs R B Carey to move to Gearing Nebraska where he will lead the school system. Several community members noted deaths and visits ranging from Clarks Welch s passing in Quincy Michigan to relatives visiting Stromsburg and surrounding towns.
A tribute note expresses sincere thanks from Mrs Clara Blase and children for kindness and flowers. It also notes Miss Elizabeth Allison left for Denver to work at St. Joseph hospital after three weeks with her Polk parents. Mrs C A Harden and daughter from Kansas City visited the Crow home earlier in the week.
Fire Department responded to a small fire at the Progress Office after it was spotted by two passersby. The blaze burned a section of floor likely from a cigarette, but was contained with little damage. Thanks given to Mrs Milton Anderson for reporting the fire and aiding the effort.
Mrs. Charles Cosner born Lottie Heater near Clarks Nebraska on August 15 1879 died June 20 1936 aged 46 years 10 months and 26 days She lived near Clarks most of life until health forced retirement from farming now living with daughter and son in law Van Bush near Polk Survived by daughter Mildred two Polk granddaughters sister Sophie Gillard Idaho Falls Idaho Funeral services were held at Brauer Funeral Home and Presbyterian Church Clarks with Rev Bailey officiating Interment at Clarks Cemetery
The Van Bush family expresses heartfelt thanks to friends and neighbors for support during their recent bereavement and gratitude to those who sent flowers.
Alice Rivera Blase daughter of Henry J and Clara Blase was born May 2 1919 near Hordville Nebraska. She died June 14 1936 at Lutheran Hospital York Nebraska after an operation at age 17 years 1 month 12 days. Funeral services were held June 17 at 2 pm from the house and 230 pm at Emmanuel Lutheran Church with interment at Lutheran Cemetery. Her mother survives along with four brothers Victor Arnold Gilbert and Harold and two sisters Lydia Berges and Hilda Parker. Her father died in November 1934.
Mrs. A. K. Crow and her daughter spent the weekend visiting relatives in Benedict, staying with family members and sharing time with kin.
The Grocery Stores Cream Stations and similar businesses will close at ten o clock on Saturday July 4 for Independence Day observance. Drug stores restaurants and filling stations will remain open in the afternoon and evening to serve the public. All stores will be open Friday evening until usual Saturday night closing hour as adopted by neighboring towns.
Stromberg families held their annual third Sunday in June picnic at Buckley Park Stromsboro. An afternoon program featured children performers. Miss Helen Widga daughter of Mr and Mrs Ludwig Widga near Stromsburg married Chalmer Daniels son of Mrs M C Daniels on Monday at 2 pm at the groom’s mother home Rev C B Maxey read the marriage lines The couple was attended by Mr and Mrs Floyd Morris of near Poll They left immediately for a wedding trip.
Miss Francesa Scherzer daughter of Mr and Mrs L H Scherzer of Lincoln wed Wallace Johnson of Omaha son of Mr and Mrs Charles Johnson of Hordville at Bethany Christian Church Lincoln Rev Hugh Lomax officiated Miss Marjorie Matson organ and Miss Lucille Benson sang The groom a local figure is grandson of Mr J Hanquist They plan a wedding trip to the Great Lakes and will reside in Omaha.
A Shelby county reunion and picnic of the Taddiken families drew 104 attendees at Riverside Park Central City last Sunday. Shelby participants included multiple Taddiken relatives and friends, with extended family visiting from nearby towns.
