Furacin, a drug from farm waste materials like oat hulls and bran, proved as effective as sulfa drugs in early chicken cocci diosi trials. It caused less toxicity and allowed faster growth, though initially costly and scarce, with wider availability anticipated for poultry producers.
A 1 percent DDT emulsion sprayed on poultry manure two days before removal yielded complete fly control at the Hawaii Agricultural Experiment Station. Application rate was one pint per 30 square feet. Adding lime twice weekly reduced odor and moisture and cut flies but seemed to lessen DDT effectiveness per poultry specialists.
