Rodney Johnson Receives Good Neighbor Award at Polk Club

At a Polk Community Club meeting KL Stewart presented Rodney Johnson of Polk with the Ak Sar Ben Good Neighbor Award for organizing clothing shipments to war torn Viet Nam children. Attendees planned a Fourth of July ball game with fireworks and selling sloppy Joe and hotdog sandwiches at the Polk ball field with a $1 admission per family.

Milford Technical graduates four from Nebraska program

Dennis Lb. Anderson of Clarks and Donald D. Hanquist of Polk joined two hundred classmates at the Nebraska Vocational Technical School Milford Nebr to earn an Associate of Applied Arts degree after the spring session. Dennis will work in building construction for Judd Brothers in Lincoln while Donald heads to Geis Motors in York for auto body work. Both are sons of Polk residents.

Trimmette Tops Have First Anniversary Celebration

Hardville Trimmette Tops marked one year with 21 of 22 members at Parma Werner home in Polk. Liz Waugh named queen. door prize went to Shirley Lampshire. Corsages, heart ribbons for ten pound losses, and KOPS hearts in gold highlighted the event. Division winners included Parma Werner, Shirley Lampshire, Beverly Winchester, and Donita Lampshire. Perfect attendance awards went to Hilda Flodman and Alice Klingsporn. Anniversary cake featured a rose for each member.

Summer Rec Fund Gains During Week

The Summer Recreation Fund increased by $185 for the week amid community fundraising. Local donors including Mr and Mrs Marvin Branting and Farmers Union Coop Oil contributed amounts. a total of $569.08 was reported along with in-kind donations of popcorn and equipment. Youth baseball results included Polk vs Benedict games with Bender and Eckers in strong pitching, and upcoming games noted for next Sunday and Monday evenings.

Emken 40th Wedding Anniversary Open House

Gum Stick Unlocks Car at Stromberg Reunion

Mrs Larry Coover reported her son Eddie locked in the car after a Stromberg family reunion. Eddie pushed the lock button, and a stick of gum used as a key allowed him to open the door from inside, freeing Mrs Coover. The incident occurred Monday afternoon with the windows up.

Polk Nebr Soldier Receives Second Army Commendation Medal

Specialist Four Edward D Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harlan E Johnson of Polk Nebraska, earned his second Army Commendation Medal for heroism in ground combat in Vietnam on May 20. He serves with Company B, 6th Battalion, 9th Infantry Division, 31st Infantry. Johnson entered service in February 1968, trained at Fort Lewis, arrived overseas last August, and holds the Purple Heart. He is 22, a Polk High School graduate (1964) who attended Kearney State College.

Vance Stohl Earns Kearney State BA in Education

Vance Stohl son of Mr and Mrs Walter Stohl graduates from Kearney State College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education. He is a member of Alph Tau Omega Mu Epsilon Nu and the Industrial Arts Club and was a drafting assistant in the Industrial Arts Department. His last semester earned Deans List honors and he will teach Industrial Arts at Irving Junior High in Lincoln this fall.

Polk County youths begin military service draft call

Allen Tenniges, son of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Tenniges, left Monday for Omaha with York County youths drafted for induction. Darwin Neuhaus, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Neuhaus, enlisted in the regular army for two years and went to Omaha, then flew by jet to Fort Polk Louisiana for basic training.
