Store Employees Help To Harvest Hidden Tax Crop
Polk County estimates 277 unofficial tax collectors are store clerks in 124 local shops contributing hidden taxes. The National Consumers Tax Commission says clerks behind counters collect fractions of taxes in every sale, raising prices. The NCTC runs study groups in 4,000 communities across 45 states to expose these taxes led in Nebraska by Mrs I S Magowan Gordon and Mrs George Dewald Westpoint.

Fire damages several chicken houses at R L Smith farm
Polk's fire department and neighbors fought a blaze at the R L Smith home Saturday afternoon as a kerosene stove explosion started a fire threatening the windward farm buildings. Four chicken houses burned including one with about 150 birds before the flames were stopped.
