The Beet Poen Mutton Club met Friday evening at the R. L. Smith home. Ed Anderson was chosen as leader. Members discussed various cuts of meat and were served lunch by Mrs. Smith at the end.
Polk county farm reporters start a compliance program audit this week under County Agricultural Conservation committee chair Robert C. Taddiken. About 25 reporters will inspect roughly 1850 farms, with 1525 plans indicating full compliance and 1238 seeking parity payments for corn or wheat.
A Smith family reunion honored M. F. Smith on his 85th birthday at the R. L. Smith home. Attendees included children and many grandchildren, with guests from Scottsbluff Hastings and Lincoln. Smith Davis read poems written by the celebrant, and well wishes were offered for many more birthdays.
Polk county farmers lost 2746.87 dollars on rye mixed wheat shipped to market. Nebraska Grain Improvement Association secretary Fred Siefer told Agricultural Agent Peterson this week, citing an eight year study with NYA help. Last year 105649 bushels were shipped containing 18 percent rye, making flour discolored and unrecoverable. A June field-meeting across 21 counties will show test plots from 100 farms, with Polk county plots on the Lynn Brigham farm near Shelby.
Polk sent 27 runs past St Stanislaus as Keith Green led the attack with four hits. Pointz pitched well for Polk, with J Widga hitting a homer and Cowgill adding three hits. Polk has won three straight, scoring 58 to 14 over that span. Next Sunday they travel to Columbus. County Board of Equalization meets June 13 14 and 15 in Osceola. County Clerk John I Anderson notes this notice.
The Women’s Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist church met Thursday afternoon at Mrs. P. J. Garten’s home with Mrs. B. Pengelly assisting. Mrs. Neil McNaught led devotion and Mrs. W. J. Kroger directed the program. Junior members contributed several special numbers.
Irene Stewart expresses gratitude to everyone for remembering her during illness and to the Senior class members for a thoughtful gift.
Mr. and Mrs. G. F. Brownfield of Lincoln stayed with her parents Mr. and Mrs. G. M. Hill over the weekend. They departed Sunday to visit relatives in Greeley and Sterling, Colorado, for a short stay.
Lucinda Knerr born February 22 1856 near Brighton Iowa moved with family to Nebraska then back to Polk Missouri River area living on farms until 1918 when Polk became home. She died June 4 1939 at age 83 with funeral services held Tuesday at the Polk Methodist Church.
The Baptist Church and Evangelical Free Church host a two week Vacation Bible School starting Monday. Enrollment reached 83 with 13 teachers each day guiding four departments for boys and girls. Ebba Hanquist serves as secretary and Irene Whitacre as pianist.
A large gathering from the Free Church of Polk and relatives met at Mr. and Mrs. C. Rodine’s Hardville area home Monday to honor their 20th wedding anniversary. Mr. Rodine chairs the church while Mrs. Rodine leads the Ladies Aid. Rudolph Nyberg presented a group gift as a program and refreshments followed late.
Mrs. Blanch Patchin hosted Mr. and Mrs. Chester Johnson and family and Mrs. Mae Evans of Mulden Neb on Tuesday of last week. Mrs. Evans stayed longer. Mr. and Mrs. J B Stouffer left Wednesday for Rochester Minnesota for medical advice and expected to be away about two weeks.
Local social roundup details the annual Pals of the Gay Nineties picnic at York on June 2 with attendees from Arborville and Lincoln. Other items include Decoration Day observances, Alumni Banquet at York College, and residents visiting relatives in nearby towns.
James Oliver Thomas, born June 25 1884 in Aurora, died of a heart attack May 29 in San Marino California. He lived in Polk and Galesburg Illinois before moving to California where he owned a ladies garments business in Los Angeles. He is survived by his wife and one son Burke.
Dr and Mrs Dana Westfall of Springview Nebraska were called to Polk Wednesday due to the serious illness of his father Dr D H Westfall. His condition improved and Dana returned to Sprigview Monday evening. Mr and Mrs Elmer Hanquist and family visited Columbus Sunday for a reunion of the 314 Supply Train of the 89th Division.
Approximately 250 people attended the 63rd homecoming of District 51 near Stromsburg as former pupils teachers and friends gathered. Speakers included Mrs Dana Little, L A Erickson Olaf F Alfred I D Huston and Will Johnson with a program noting district history and generations of participants.
The Jolly Workers 4 H Club met last Wednesday at Mrs E L Lackeys home with 11 members and 3 visitors present. One new member Margaret Bedient joined. The program of work for the next two weeks was discussed and individual demonstrations included measuring flour and other materials. A delicious lunch was served by hostesses Jean Severn Marjorie White Goldie Van Ostrand and Betty Morris.
