Vacation Bible School closes at Polk Methodist Church

The Polk Methodist Church held a closing program for Vacation Bible School on Sunday morning May 30, with daily classes May 24 through May 28. The event drew 49 pupils under Superintendent Mrs Harold Anderson, featuring a full staff of teachers and assistants, plus song leader Mrs Edward Saylor and pianists Cheryl Anderson and Kay Nielsen.

Open house marks El don Johnsons silver anniversary

An open house for the El don Johnsons silver anniversary drew about 150 friends and relatives on a sunny June day. Mrs Ruth Kroger greeted guests, a linen table held a wedding bell cake, and the Johnson children Linda and Bruce, plus Bruce’s wife Judy, hosted and greeted visitors.

Lindholms honored on 40th wedding anniversary at Polk church

Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Lindholm celebrated 40 years of marriage Sunday May 30 at the First Methodist Church in Polk with about 60 relatives. Their four children hosted the event, with grandchildren and relatives from Nebraska, Colorado, and Kansas attending.

Nebraska student joins journalism sorority Theta Sigma Phi

Natalie Hahn, a sophomore and daughter of Mr and Mrs Dwight Burney, was among 12 University of Nebraska journalism students inducted into Theta Sigma Phi in late May. Eligibility focuses on strong academic average and leadership in journalism.

Mrs Larsen Dies at 49 After Illness

Mrs Rodney Larsen died May 31 at home after an extended illness at age 49. She leaves husband and three children Max Jane and JoAnn and a brother Ralph Donelson and sister Mrs C Gordon Carlson. Funeral services were June 3 from the Baptist church in Stromsburg.

Polk High School Banquet The Big Telecast Theme

The annual Polk High School Banquet was held Friday May 28 in the High School Auditorium with 159 alumni present including six from the class of 1965. Ellsworth Carlson presided and introduced honored classes while new officers were named. A piano recital is set for June 11 at 8 p.m. and 250 cheerleaders attended a Chadron State College short course May 30 to June 3 covering drills and crowd psychology.

Lincoln student wins $200 nursing scholarship

Miss Patricia Ann Stephens of Lincoln receives a Presidents Scholarship for nursing from the American Legion Auxiliary. She graduates Lincoln High with NHS honors and is an eight of 300 Pep Club members bound for the University of Nebraska this fall. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs Wilfred Stephens.

Polk High Senior Wins University Scholarships

Steven Flodman 17 and valedictorian earns 900 in freshman aid from the University of Nebraska. The award breaks into 100 gift scholarship 400 National Defense Education Assn loan and 400 work grant. He graduated with 94.8 percent from Polk High’s 28 student class.

Kathleen Rowlison and Mervin Oberg wed in Kearney

Kathleen Rowlison daughter of the Wert Whitneys of Kearney married Mervin Oberg son of the Floyd Obergs of Polk on Saturday at 7 30 p m in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovahs Witnesses in Kearney. A double ring ceremony featured a backdrop of white snap dragons and blue carnations. The bride wore a white lace gown with chapel train and fingertip veil. Attendants included matron of honor Mrs Shirley Harvey and best man Jim Rookstool. After a reception for 45 guests at the bride’s parents home the newlyweds left for a trip to Colorado Springs and plan to live in Polk where the groom farms and works at Fredrickson Implement Co.
