Soil erosion losses and terrace methods cut farm damage
Soil studies show sheet erosion from 13 percent of sediment and roadsides 17 percent in early US watersheds. A western wheat field lost 165 tons per acre, about 1.1 inches, with wheat yields dropping to 42 bu acre or 10 bu acre in highly eroded patches. Loss valued at about $12 per acre. terrace systems and drainage reduce erosion. The County Soil and Water Conservation District offers planning help and ASCS cost share for conservation.
