Sunday evening notes heavy rain across Polk County with 6.53 inches officially recorded at the bank gauge while other gauges showed less. Readers report flooding, wind, and disbelieving locals debate gauge accuracy as ponds form in fields and frogs fill the nights.
John F. Scott begins duties as cashier at Citizens State Bank on June 12. He and wife Mrs. Scott moved from Pocatello to Polk after her ISU Business School graduation. Scott formerly worked for Flandro Motor Co and spent time with the Dodgers rookie squad. he is a noted bowler with ISU titles and Gold Dust Doubles success.
Coach Bill LaVelle struggles to schedule dry evenings for games and practice as wet weather strains the Summer Recreation Fund. Donations totaling 394.04 fall short of needs while upcoming games include girls at 8:00 p.m. against a Grand Island team, a Friday double header with Gresham, Benedict visit Sunday, and Columbus trip for older girls at 7:30. Continuous weather permitting.
Mr and Mrs Ronald Beins of Aurora entertained Mr and Mrs Clarence Johnson and family at a dinner in York on Sunday.
The annual summer picnic of Nebraskans who winter in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas will be held at the 4 H Fair Grounds in York next Saturday. A M Trollope of Waco is president George Garrison of David City is vice president and Mrs Orville Baker of Polk is secretary. Special committees assist with arrangements for the June 17 picnic.
Mr and Mrs Irvin Beckstrom announce the birth of a daughter on June 7 at Annie Jeffrey hospital Osceola. The newborn weighed 8 pounds 3 ounces and is named Lisa Dawn.
From May 27 through June 12, Nebraska townships logged 15.42 inches of rain with daily wet spells after June 5. May totals reached 12.37 inches in June, while the January–May period had little moisture. Tornado warnings and sighted twisters near Grand Island and Chapman accompany the soggy weather.
The Ronald Foote family who moved to Polk received a welcome reception Monday night at the Polk Bible Camp. Sponsored by the Midwest Conference, Foote is the new camp manager and Mrs Foote will be head cook. Rev Koelling led a program in their honor. WMS of Polk Evangelical Free Church served refreshments. The Foote couple are parents of nine children, seven at home.
James Brazda Sr. was a patient in Central City hospital from Friday to Monday. Mrs W C Steel remains in Osceola hospital after injuries from a Monday fall at her home. Ed Klingsporn is listed as a patient in Aurora hospital.
York couple Mr and Mrs Svante Stenbeck celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house at York Methodist Church on June 25 from 1 30 to 4 30 p m. Friends and relatives are welcome without further notice. No gifts.
Mr and Mrs Elmer Hanquist celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a Sunday open house at the Baptist Church parlors from 2:30 to 5:00 PM. Friends and relatives are invited and the couple requests no gifts.
The Polk Gideon Camp held a meeting in Polk Community Hall on Thursday evening. Guest speaker was Graham Burns, an international representative from Australia. Local church pastors attended and refreshments followed.
Objects of interest at the Arborville Boys and Bugs 4-H Club gathering included butterfly nets killing jars spreading boards and bee hives. Charles Otte demonstrated a spreading board and Dennis Ditloff showed assembling a bee hive. Joe Pankaskie spoke on insect collecting. Lunch was provided at the Wochner home. The next meeting will be June 21 at the Owen Bedient home.
Rev Patten and Mrs C Marvin Fredrickson attended the 107th Nebraska annual conference at Nebraska Wesleyan University. Mrs Fredrickson was named Layman for Swede Plain and Polk churches and to serve as teller for the Columbus district. Rev Max McCanley appointed her. Delegates approved uniting the Methodist and Evangelical United Brethren churches.
Mrs Anna Kisler and her daughter Mrs Dennis Jacobsen and Dwight of Sacramento were Sunday evening supper guests of Mr and Mrs Richard Johnson.
