After a week of unseasonable cooling the weekend brought near hundred degree heat in Polk County. Farmers seek rain as two weeks pass without measurable precipitation while harvest nears completion and corn continues to grow.
Smick Williams, Stromsburg and Osceola telephone man, drew praise after a clutch final inning hit at Lincoln Sunday that broke a tie against Sandy and helped Stromsburg win. Tags as next mayor candidate, Smick’s long baseball history noted.
Miss Mary Alice Ekstrom became the bride of Floyd Spelts of Stromsburg in a Swede Home church ceremony Sunday July 27 at 8:00 p m Rev Thure Johnson officiated before nearly 200 guests The bride wore white marquisette and carried gardenias on a Bible Attendants were Orpha Ekstrom Maid of Honor Rosalie Speirs Bridesmaid Best Man David Speirs Wayne Speirs ushers Flower girl Miriam Carlson Hearer Daryl Swanson Reception followed at the church lawn The bride is daughter of A E Ekstrom Swede Home and taught rural schools in Polk County The groom is son of Mr and Mrs Lester Spelts Stromsburg and works for an oil company they will reside in Stromsburg.
Mrs. R B Nelson and Mr and Mrs Richard K Nelson and son Craig visited Lincoln with Maurice New comer. Miss Harriet Carlson returned to Chicago after two weeks with Ernest Carlson and family. The Carlson, Smith and Thelander families planned trips to Idaho Oregon and California. Gladys Wilson traveled to Estes Park Colorado and Billings Montana. Harold Covey visited Fremont with Raymond Reed and family.
Stewar D Farmer 29 of Canton Minnesota died after rescuing his 4 year old daughter Luynne when their car stalled on railroad tracks west of Osceola fairgrounds. The freight train struck as Mrs Farmer escaped. Farmer lost a leg and died after hospital transfusions. The child and Mrs Farmer survived. He was a schoolteacher.
Mrs. Oscar Sundberg Donna and Jimmy and Mrs. A. C. Bates and Arthur were business visitors in Lincoln on Thursday.
