Mr and Mrs Melvin Bender of Clarks and Mr and Mrs Leonard Warnick of Polk announce the engagement of Kathie Bender and Tony Warnick. Kathie is a 1975 Polk High School and 1976 Grand Island School of Business graduate and works at Hy-Mark Industries in Henderson. Tony is a Polk High School graduate from 1969 and runs Tony's Standard Service in Polk. A September 4 wedding is planned.
Harold and Mrs Ortegren of Hordville welcome Derek Lin born July 23 at Aurora Hospital weighing 8 pounds 14 ounces. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Roy Ortegren and Mr and Mrs Don Shoup of Hordville. Merle Ortegren of Hastings is mother of Kerri Lynn born July 26 weighing 8 pounds 5 ounces. Roy Ortegren again listed as paternal grandparent. Douglas Sundberg of Lincoln and Mrs Harvey Sundberg are parents of Brian Daniel born July 23 with Sundbergs as paternal grandparents.
Clarence Rahrs returned home Thursday afternoon from Central City hospital. Mrs Martin Hoffman Sr. entered York hospital Sunday evening. Mrs Grace Harless is a patient in York hospital. Jennifer Kennel, daughter of Mr and Mrs David Kennel of Grand Island, entered St. Francis hospital in Grand Island on Friday.
The author recalls Lloyd Kroger and P. J. Garten as genial storekeepers whose family grocery stores faced stiff competition from supermarkets. Ruth ran a store after Lloyd's death, then sold out. ThePure Food Grace and Farmers Store competed both hard and friendly, with mutual borrowing when items ran short.
A benefit game to aid the financially strapped Summer Recreation Fund is set for Friday August 6 at 8 p.m. on Polk field. Catfish Hunter and Johnny Bench may attend if possible. Donations accepted at Citizens State Bank Progress office or Tony's Standard Service. a $18.39 car collection from Fourth of July adds to the fund.
Mr and Mrs Gilbert Lampshire celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house on Sunday August 1 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Community Hall in Polk. Hosts are their children and spouses Marvin and Stella McKenzie of Overland Park Kansas Wayne Lampshire of New Orleans Indiana. They have five grandchildren. Your presence, no gifts.
The Progress acknowledges a correction to last week’s open house announcement for Mr and Mrs Gilbert Lampshire. It should state that friends and relatives may attend without invitation.
Mr and Mrs Lorrel Branting host a party at Parkview in Central City on Saturday afternoon to honor Cliff Branting turning 85. Guests include Branting relatives from Clarks Polk York Hastings and Hastings area plus two granddaughters and a great granddaughter. Mrs Lorren Branting contributed home made mints and two granddaughters helped serve. Other home residents attended.
Mr and Mrs Fred Dornburgh and their sons of Schuyler spent the weekend with his parents, Mr and Mrs Lyle Dornburgh.
Senior citizens bingo returns on August 4 at 2 00 p m at the Legion Hall with an invitation to join for fun and games.
The Dahlin family and relatives gathered Friday evening for a surprise birthday celebration for Alvin Dahlin. A carry in lunch was served. Attendees included Donald Dahlin, Ritchie and Scott Stromsburg, Doyle and Gary Doyle Dahlin Hallam, Gary Siebe and Doug Jones Omaha, Kim Dahlin and Karalee Crete, Robert Stevens, Debbie and Melody Buck, Greg Stevens and Allison, Doug Stevens, Jennifer and Danny, Rick Goldsby, Rich Stainsbury Lincoln, Shery Sloup Larry Sehrage Omaha, Marion Johnson Isceola.
Coach Richard Owens says practice begins Monday August 16 with physicals for boys and girls at the Elementary School gym. Boys report at 9 a.m. and girls at 10 a.m. Urine specimens are requested.
Mr Everett Goertzen and son Mark and Henry Ditmer vacation in Colorado this week. Mr and Mrs Dean Myers were Saturday guests of Mr and Mrs Wm Hokanson and family at Lincoln. They also visited Mr and Mrs Keith Myers at Lincoln on Saturday evening. Harry Dahlin was a Sunday dinner guest of Mr and Mrs Alvin Dahlin.
The Polk Little Eight League team, age 15-HI, won the tournament they hosted last week by beating Shelby 12-11 in the final. Polk girls earlier defeated Benedict 8-5 Osceola 5-4 to reach the finals, with Janis Fowler as head coach and Jan Bankson as assistant.
