F. E. Saindon, former Polk schools coach, was killed late Friday when a plane from O'Neill municipal airport crashed near the country club clubhouse. Survivors include his widow and three children.
The Baptist Sunday School Picnic drew many attendees at Buckley Park last Thursday evening with a supper by the fireplace. Elmer Hanquist led the devotions and several children were honored for six months of perfect attendance. Some pupils received partial tuition to the Baptist Youth Camp in Fullerton next week under Rev and Mrs Lemke who oversee the camp.
The Camp Fire Girls held a July 20 meeting electing Donna Monson as President Patty Kisler as Vice President Jeanelle Kroger as Secretary and Shirley Hahn as Scribe. An overnight camping trip to Riverside was discussed and members were asked to call 72W3 to join.
Osceola Juniors defeated Humphrey 13 to 1 on Humphrey field to close league play undefeated. Gabriel pitched a solid game, improving on the mound as 15 players saw action under Coach Wilhelm near tournament time at Osceola. The team is considered a strong contender for the upcoming district tournament August 6 to 8, with a subsequent 4 to 2 non-league win over Geneva at Osceola Tuesday night.
George Ervin Kulker aged 62 died en route to Central City hospital after being struck while crossing Highway 30 by a car with Illinois plates. Ambulance from Clarks rushed him to the hospital where he died on arrival. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Braurer Funeral Home Polls with Rev. Earle Eaton officiating and Polk cemetery burial.
A farewell gathering honored Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Ramp and their family at the Methodist church on Tuesday evening.
The Pleasant Home Makers club hosted the 4 Leaf Clover club at Sharlee and Sandra Hill home. The group opened with flag salute and pledge, sang several songs, and heard demonstrations on planning a kitchen and home milk pasteurization. Twenty members attended with guests Betty Bartratt from Lincoln and Marcard and Phyllis Peterson from Greeley Colorado.
August schedule lists services at Baptist Church led by Rev Melford Olson on August 11 and August 8 at Methodist Church. Polk Bible Camp and Free Church host August 15 and August 22 with SOQS Conf Bible Camp noted.
Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church of Swede Home marks its 75th anniversary with August 4 services led by Alfred Franzen. History displays, heirlooms, and a 40 page booklet accompany lectures by Dr Oscar Benson and a moving-picture record of events. Church history notes date from 1878 and the 1914 building. current property valued over 100000, organ valued at 12000.
Mrs Maude Allen and her daughter from Azusa California visited here last week with her sister and husband Mr and Mrs Charles Lytle Mrs Norman Dobberstein of Cranwell California arrived Thursday to visit in the home of her parents Mr and Mrs Henry Mundt and other relatives
The Polk County Extension reports a successful Conservation Field Day held July 23 with good attendance and on schedule. Highlights included irrigation demonstrations on the Anderson farm, stubble mulch farming, water use, and equipment demonstrations. Shelby carpenter Louis Nicolas drowned when his aluminum boat capsized on Lake Babcock near Columbus Sunday. Nicolas and Max Harms were fishing. Harms tried to reach him but Nicolas disappeared and was recovered Monday morning. Harms, exhausted from the rescue attempt, is under medical care after hernia and strain. Nicolas was a WWI veteran and survived by a wife and two children. The obituary will run in a later issue.
The Polk County AAA Committee received notice from Grain Branch in Washington that the original wheat loan rate of two dollars and eight cents per bushel was incorrect due to freight-rate miscalculation from the Washington office. The corrected loan rate is one cent higher.
The article recounts the withstanding iron boundary marker placed May 8, 1855 by Col. Charles A. Manners at the 40th parallel marking the Kansas Nebraska line. It notes its transport from St Joseph, reerections in 1890 1919 and later repairs through 1922 1924 and reports its current upright cement base after a spring visit by Senator Harold Prichard Ray Parrish and James C Olson.
Mrs Merle Stromberg entertained a Tuesday afternoon gathering with relatives from Palmer Hardville and local families. The Scaley family welcomed a baby boy born July 21 at Stromsburg hospital. Notable visits include B Johnson and L Beyer in York and A Stevens Linnie visiting Martha Myers and Fern. Phyllis Bottum wed in Lincoln with Linnie Shafer in attendance. F E Saindon of O Neill, ex Polk teacher, died in an airplane crash leaving wife Lois and three children. Funeral attendees from Polk listed. obituary to appear next week.
