The Merry Makers 4-H Club closed its year with a city park picnic on Wednesday. Members and leaders attended, with demonstrations by Gwenda Ramp Jo Ellyn Nelson Lois Miller Judy Cramer and Marcia Johnson. Anita Samuels guest. secretaries noted perfect attendance for five members.
The Evan gelical Free Churches hold their annual Nebraska conference at Polk Bible Camp from August 10 to 15. Morning Bible studies are by Dr. Harold Lundquist of Chicago and evening services by Rev. Lester Westlund of Sioux City Iowa. Rev Burns Anderson from Chicago will lead the choir with mission aries state pastors and young workers adding to the program. Public welcome to morning Bible hours and evening evangelistic services.
Funeral services for Ferdinand Eli Saindon known as F E Saindon were held at St Patrick’s Church with Rev J Werner officiating. Remains were shipped to Denver for burial. The service followed rosary at the Saindon home. Saindon born February 12, 1917 in Zurich Kansas was a noted athletic coach and baseball player. He married Lois Cramer on August 27 1941 and had three children Barbara Michael and Steven. He coached at O Neill and mentored American Legion teams and basketball tournaments. Survivors include his widow three children his parents two brothers and three sisters.
Miss Mildred Olson returns to Lincoln after visiting family in Racine Wisconsin and here with her mother Mrs Chas Olson. Mrs Chas Olson heads to Omaha and Avoca to stay with daughters. Norman Lee and Richard Allan Fredrickson return to Omaha after two weeks with their grandmother Mrs Chas Olson. Mrs Paul Fontaine returns to Fort Crook after visiting here with the Vernons. Mrs Paul Fontaine of Fort Crook and Mrs Vernon Henkel were guests of Mrs Frank Baker.
Mr and Mrs Frank Fossberg spent the weekend in Hastings visiting Mr and Mrs John Adams at their home.
Cecil Blaine Newton born November 20 1901 died July 30 1948 at age 46 at his Polk home. He lived in Wymore and Polk before joining the Nebraska Children's Home then grew to manhood in Polk. He married Margaret Campbell in 1924 and had four children. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church with IOOF in charge and burial in Arborville Cemetery.
Sunday evening guests were Mr and Mrs C J McCoy who called on the Harry Guidinger household.
The Polk Progress announces a free studio event with Waltz Studios of Des Moines to photograph local children on Thursday August 12 at Polk Hotel from 1 00 to 730. Every child photographed may be published and four cutest children will win prizes based on personality and charm. Parents may obtain extra prints by arrangement with the studio. No charge no obligation and open to all children regardless of subscriber status.
Mrs Hennie Seymour and John Adelson attended the Renquist picnic at York park on Sunday with 65 attendees from North Platte MHoldredge Grand Island Madison Stroms burg Osceola Polk Gresham York Hastings California and Benedict. Swede Plain Sunday School picnic also held at Osceola park.
Mr and Mrs Adolph Gabel marked their 55th anniversary with family at their north Shelby home. Born in Austria, Gabel immigrated to Nebraska in 1871 and wed Caroline Koenig in 1893. The couple retired to Shelby in 1941 and have three daughters and eight grandchildren.
About 25 Polk Free Church youths traveled to Grand Island for a statewide FYCS banquet at the Yancey Hotel Friday evening. Other local social notes include visits to Columbus and California by area families and multiple Sunday gatherings and dinners.
Osceola junior Legion beat Sutton 8 to 2 as McCormick struck out 16 and allowed 3 hits. Rex Grossnicklaus hit a triple, Kershaw caught, both teams had four errors, and Osceola eyes the Area Tournament set for August 5 to 8 with a Friday night opener against Wahoo or Cedar Bluffs.
Plans for the American Legion Baseball Class A tournament in Osceola August 3 6 7 and 8 are complete. Norfolk opens Thursday at 2 30 pm with Osceola hosting a full schedule through Sunday night. Eight games determine two finalists advancing to the elimination tournament and state finals. hotel housing applies to teams over 100 miles. others must arrange own lodging.
The Swede Home Church ends its 75th anniversary with a 3 p m Sunday Historical Service featuring Dr Oscar A Benson and Dr C O Gullen. Activities included Thursday and Friday sessions, a Memorial service, and weekend offerings for missions and college funds. Visitors noted.
