4-H Fair 1950 Exhibits and Program Preview

Prospects good for most 4-H projects rope garden and rabbit with food exhibits dominating girls work due to rising cooking and canning enrollments. The fair plans 4x7 ft booths for eight clubs and an afternoon program on August 23 featuring parade grand champion ribbons demonstrations judging riding contest and special awards. KC Fouts will judge livestock and 4-H ribbons are expected to reach about 950 with 39 Rosettes prepared.

Thirty five descendants gathered Sunday to honor Clifford Branting on his birthday anniversary, with children and grandchildren present to celebrate the occasion for the father and grandfather.

Mrs Roland Rodine enjoyed a pleasant birthday afternoon when guests arrived with gifts and two birthday cakes. Attending ladies included Mesdames Wilmer Rodine Lillie Johnson Fred Stellars Edwin Glad Gordon Glad Harvey Lind Marilyn Lind and Denah Samuelson. Miss Samuelson of Lincoln was a guest in the Bodine home Thursday and Friday.

The Union Evening Service will be held in the Methodist church Sunday evening at eight o'clock. Rev. Clifford Smith will preach the sermon. Everyone is welcome.

Stohl Rost Wedding At Calvary Lutheran Church

Miss Marcia Stohl and John Waldo Rost wed July 23 at Calvary Lutheran Church near Stromsburg in a double ring ceremony. The event drew about 200 guests with music by Rodney Wendell and Lillie Chindgren. The bride wore heirloom lace with a long veil. entourages wore aqua and yellow gowns. After a reception the couple planned to live in Axtell where the bride will return to teaching and the groom works at Peterson Motor Co.

Cramer Family Attends Wedding in York Visit

Mr and Mrs E C Cramer and family visited Sunday in the Raymond Shockey home at York. They attended the wedding of Barbara Trapp, the ladies cousin, in the afternoon. Appreciation extended to Polk Methodist Church for a bouquet sent to the Pearson family for an anniversary program by Hordville Methodist Church last Sunday. See Hordville news column for details.

A farewell party was given Friday evening at the Johnson home for Derald Johnson who leaves Monday for the Navy. Herman Brauer Laid to Rest in Polk Community

Herman Gustav Brauer born October 18 1873 near Crete Nebraska died July 18 1950 at 76 served Polk as mayor board of education city council chief of volunteer fire department mortician for 21 years and built the first concrete burial vaults He was active in Immanuel Lutheran Church and survived by Grace his wife four daughters four sons in laws eight grandchildren and other relatives. He is remembered for honesty integrity and devoted service to family and town. A July birthday picnic honored group members later.

Women’s Missionary Circle Meets at Baptist Church

The Women’s Missionary Circle met in the church parlors on Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Walter Nelson led the program. Mrs. Elwood Anderson introduced speakers, with Mrs. Maurice Wessman of Sioux Falls discussing foreign work and May Denver conference plans. Betta Mayer of Omaha, newly appointed to the Philippines, spoke, urging prayer and giving. Mrs. Jeanette Widen's solos completed the program. The Sunny Sues 4-H Club met July 18 at Delores and Dianne Doremus with thirteen members present. Demonstrations covered nosebleeds fainting and bed making by Lynda Dornburgh Florence Ruzicka and Maxine Harbaus. In Polk County a $79,000 sewer plan is delayed because prospective bidders cannot obtain pipe. Many locals see little tax impact but others lament the delay while harvests suffer from rain. Polk Honors Legion Leader for Playground Grant

The American Legion in Polk funded five hundred dollars for a new playground at the city park. Arnold Newhaus, commander, led the effort with community help. he has lived in Polk since 1947, served in World War II, and works as Polk Theatre manager and town electrician. His wife Loretta and sons Allan and Darwin are noted as well.

A Wilson family reunion gathered 38 relatives from Chicago and several Iowa towns including Shenandoah Central City Archer Clarks and York. A three tier cake honored the family and recent birthdays at the Sunday gathering.

Eleven members and two visitors attended the Merry Makers 4-H Club meeting at Sally Peterson’s home on July 21. Vice President Judy Johnson led the session, members shared picture menus for meals, and each girl reported on activities since the last meeting.Donna Cohagen and Carmen Sandell organized games and two were played. Sally Peterson, Rosalie Nelson, and Judy Johnson read poems. A lunch followed, hosted by Sally Peterson and Donna Cohagen. The next gathering is August 3 at Mary Lou and Carmen Sandell’s home.
