Fire Department Puts Out Small Polk Barn Fire

The Polk Volunteer Fire Department quickly battled a blaze on a barn roof at the Joe Ehn farm at Polk’s east edge. The noon fire alarm paused dinner plans briefly as embers from a burn pile started the fire, causing minor damage and bending a ladder during a near collision with a village truck.

Polk County Fair Three Days Of Fun And Exhibits

The Polk County Fair in Osceola runs three days starting Monday July 30 with W A Thomas Carnival rides and shows. Wrestling at 8 30 pm features Rocky Hamilton vs Ernie Dusek for the Nebraska State Championship and a girls semi final Ann Regan vs Jackie Allen. Opry Tuesday night stars Martha Carson Merl Lindsay Dick Flood Autry Inman Shawnee Lawrence and Jubilee Band. Wednesday features a Horse Show and Quarter Horse Contest with 4 H Night and free grandstand admission all days.

Gas Company Prepares to Lay Polk Gas Service

The Kansas-Nebraska Gas Co. of Hastings has acquired materials for Polk gas lines and delivered pipe. With federal permit pending, work will begin soon, employing 20 to 25 workers for at least a month to have gas service ready for the winter heating season.

Rainfall totals rise with ongoing July showers

Since July 17, total rainfall reached 5.62 inches after two more showers. A shower on the 19th added 0.096 inch and a shower on the 24th contributed 0.15 inch, cresting the month’s parsimonious wet spell.

Polk To Have Barber In September

Mr and Mrs John Hascoolidge and family of Wilber Nebraska will move to Polk after September 1. They have purchased the barber and beauty shop from Philip Meline. Mr Hascoolidge will complete his barber apprenticeship in September after years as a beautician. Mrs Hascoolidge runs a beauty shop in Wilber. They seek a rental house and invite offers of available housing through the Progress office. The shop on Main St was vacant since Meline and wife moved to Grand Island last February.

Nancy Norquist Weds Robert Murray in Colorado

Mrs. Charles Norquist announces the marriage of daughter Nancy to Robert J. Murray of Denver Colorado on Saturday July 7 at Christ The King Church in Evergreen. The groom is son of Mrs. Helen Murray and the late Clair Murray of Yankton South Dakota.

Recreation Fund Continues to Grow

Last week the Progress reported $55 added to the Summer Recreation Fund bringing the total to $473. A $600 goal remains to finance the program and donations may be left at Citizens State Bank or The Pork Progress office. Donors include Elmer Berger, Johnson Garage, Pete Hahn, O B Adelson, Stromberg IGA, Vern Eklund, and Vi and Glen Babcock.

Final Band Concert This Saturday Night

The final band concert of the season will be held Saturday evening July 28 at 8 PM. Director Norman McIntosh reports strong attendance by 20 or more school band members with a varied program including Sweet Adeline Rock Comin Round the Mountain Yankee Doodle and more.

Polk Town Team Splits a Pair

Polk's softball town team split a pair of games last week as they began play this summer. The Stromsburg Legion stopped the locals 10-6 on Tuesday but Polkites bounced back Friday to beat Clarks 11-3 on the Polk field. Lusty hitting and sharp defense sparked the win with Darwin Hahn homering. John Nyberg and Bruce Johnson also contributed solid hits. only one local starter failed to reach safely.

Operation Bootstrap Hosts Notable Who's Who Visitors

Polk County Operation Bootstrap hosts a summer visitors list featuring US scientists from federal and university programs. The program toured Wilson Seed Farm and farms of local growers observing new pasture plantings with local conservationists. a later August visit will include eleven seed scientists from seven foreign countries.

Sabin Oral Vaccine To Be Given in Polk County This Fall

Polk County doctors plan to distribute Sabin Oral vaccine in four towns after school starts. People not inoculated in 1961 or 1962 should get shots for full immunity. Three doses are required at 4 to 6 week intervals. The Polk Woman's Club will assist with the first vaccination day, fee 25 cents. Watch Progress for details.

Garden Club Picnic Delights Members in Local Park

Stromsburg Osceola and Polk Garden Clubs held a picnic supper in the park on Tuesday July 17. Mrs Jim Wilson presented slides of flowers and landscapes. About 45 members attended with committee members Florence Hoffman Garnet Miller and Grace Harless listed.

Hospital Admissions and Transfers in Local News

Don Dose underwent surgery at York Hospital on Wednesday afternoon. Leonard Orendorff was taken to Osceola Hospital for observation on Saturday morning. Mrs. Melvin Bender was admitted to Central City Hospital on Tuesday, July 24.
