Commodity Credit Corporation announces 1962 stored grain support rates in Polk County for Wheat 2.08 dollars per bushel Grain Sorghums 1.91 Barley 0.95 Oats 0.60 Rye 1.03 dollars per bushel Loans and purchase agreements run through January 31, 1963.
Polk's girl softball squads defeated Clarks Tuesday night. The peewees won 13 to 12 in a tight thriller while the big team cruised 11 to 4 to avenge an earlier loss. Polk hosts York Thursday, 8:00 p.m., with Bill McNaught pitching for York.
Miss Eleanor Allen of Azusa California spent the weekend at the Chas. Lytle home as a niece of Mrs. Lytle.
Polk County Soil and Water notes show heavy rains proving benefits of flood control measures. District cooperators use cropland practices like contour farming terraces and dams with tubes to retard floodwaters. Paul Swanson’s floodwater retarding dam demonstrates rapid drainage and limited permanent water damage while providing protection. Four cooperators received fish for their ponds with SCS help in pond stocking. recipients were Lennis Lind David Rutter Frank McMeekin and Elmer Richter.
Local families share visits across cities including Los Angeles Denver Chicago and Lincoln. Guests include Enoch Peterson Orville Haggstrom Ernest Johnson and others visiting relatives at ONeill Buckley Park Stromsburg and Columbus with dinners picnics and weekend stays.
Mr and Mrs Gary Skaden of Sacramento California announce the birth of a baby girl eight pounds on July 20 Mrs and Mrs Dennis Hahn of Renton Washington announce the birth of a daughter Cynthia Anne eight pounds on July 24.
Arborville 4-H clubs the Jolly Juniors and Homemakers held a July 30 picnic and swim at Stromsburg park followed by a brief business meeting. Fair sticker distribution and plan finalizing occurred. next meeting date remains unset. Sew ing project members attended the York dress revue on July 24 with Susan Hoffman and others listed.
A farewell party for the Bill Stromberg family was held at the Hollis Stromberg home Sunday evening before they move to Fort Collins Colorado next month. Guests included Mervin Stromberg Osceola Earl Stromberg Wahoo Dale Steuben Kansas City Dick Sealey Paul Coover Claude Stromberg Clarks Rolland Stromberg. Lunch was served by Hollis Stromberg with assistance from Claude Stromberg. The group presented a gift.
The gospel film The Way Out will be shown at the Polk Union Service August 5 at 8 00 p.m. in the Grade School auditorium. It tells how Al Johnson robbed the Hoyt State Bank at Hoyt Kaw and how after two ex convicts died in a wreck the case closed with Johnson confessing after reading a gospel tract. Music on accordion violin and vibraharp will be provided by the Wendell Baxters of Columbus from radio station KJSK. The public is invited to attend.
July 1962 yielded 7.04 inches of rain soaking the area. Irrigation wells stopped pumping, basins filled, and mud tires sold as the Blue River remained muddy. Knute Johnson logged the record precipitation while builders eye leaks in roofs. August starts with a trace of rain and potential more showers.
Relatives of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hanquist gathered at their home Sunday afternoon July 29 to mark their 45th anniversary. A decorative cake and two-tier candle display highlighted the celebration with out of town guests from Kearney Stromsburg York Lincoln Clarks Glasco Alameda Hughton and Denver. The couple have long served the church and community in the area.
