Ernest W Hahn Obituary Reveals Hamilton County Pioneer

Ernest William Hahn born April 3 1868 in Pommern Germany died July 18 1952 at Stromsburg Hospital at 84. He emigrated with parents to Buenos Aires and Germany before settling in Hamilton County Iowa then Polk and Hardville areas. Survived by wife Mary three sons and five daughters with 25 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Funeral in Polk Immanuel Lutheran Church featured hymns and pallbearers were grandsons with out of town relatives in attendance.

Midgets Defeated by St. Paul 9 to 7 in Close Clash

Polk Midgets sought to improve their season with a near win against St. Paul. Volk players showed solid defense on infield and behind the plate but struggled with fly balls. Carrol Shenk and McNaught pitched for Polk in a tight nine to seven loss.

Fans pick All-Star softball players for August game

Fans vote for two players per infield and pitcher and eight outfielders for a nine inning All-Star game to be held August 19. Voting runs through August 9 with ballots mailed to the Progress and signed ballots required to prevent stuffing. Admission is 25 cents for ages 12 and up.

Midgets Entered In Fremont Tourney

The State Midget Elimination Tourneys open with seven teams Scribner Columbus Hooper David City Humphrey Fremont and Polk. Polk meets Hooper at 3 pm in the first round Friday in Fremont with Scribner vs Columbus at 1:30 and David City vs Humphrey at 4:30. The three day tourney runs July 25 26 and 27 with winners advancing to Saturday games.

Polk Teenagers Detasseling for First Time in Area

A large group of Polk youths detassel corn on Virgil Bush and Wilmer Bodine farms. Over 35 teens, ages 12 to 17, earn 65 cents an hour with straw bosses directing six‑row crews. Bosses Mr and Mrs George Woods oversee safety, water, first aid, and strict silence during rows.

Shower for Mrs Merle Stromberg and Terrence

A Friday evening shower for Mrs Merle Stromberg and Terrence Lee was hosted by Mrs James Lindburg with Mrs Horace Stevens as co host. Green and yellow decor featured gladioli while guests enjoyed refreshments and gifts for eighteen attendees. Mrs Strombergs mother Mrs W E James of Hastings and aunt Miss Cassye Baugh of York attended.
