Party Honors Bride-To-Be Naomi Alfred Before Chicago Wedding

A Thursday afternoon event at the Baptist church parlors honored Miss Naomi Alfred ahead of her wedding to Aaroh S. Anshuetz of Chicago. Guests socialized and enjoyed luncheon after presenting a reading lamp to the honoree. Miss Alfred departed for Chicago Tuesday via Lincoln, having taught near Lincoln this past year.

Swede Home Threshers Picnic and Community Notes

Chester Milsap returned to California with Roy Calhoun last Thursday. Mr. Garner, recently in University Hospital Omaha, came home at week’s end. Erickson Brothers Cash Grocery marked its first anniversary on Saturday July 18 serving iced tea coffee and rolls. Annette Holmes returned to Omaha duties after a visit home. Merry Stitchers met at Helen and Ruth Erickson’s on July 16. Leland Watson of Hastings visited local businesses. Lydia Jack Lulu of Loup City visited in Hordville. Donal Johnson returned to Omaha for a short visit. Malinda Bjorkman returned from Omaha to care for her sick mother. A. Jones Wilbur plus Don Quick and Raymond Sundberg family visited M Ericson home for Junior Erickson’s second birthday. A family reunion occurred at Paul Jones home for Mr. and Mrs. Harold Sayles. Sayles and daughter Laurinne returned to Racine Wisconsin Sunday.

The Bowmans moved to the L. S. Loomer farm southeast of Arborville. John Wackner was taken to Clinic hospital in York for an appendectomy on Tuesday. Rose Bedient plans a 4-Fy Club event Friday afternoon with Mary Elizabeth Beckner assisting as hostess.

Golden Wedding Anniversary Celebrated by Mr and Mrs Mace

Mrs Grace Runquist and family attended the Golden Wedding Anniversary of her parents Mr and Mrs George Mace at Clark s Wednesday evening. Several local residents visited or traveled to nearby towns, including Miss Rae Jeanne Oberg visiting her grandfather Alfred Carlson and Claus Oberg injuring a finger requiring bone setting. Local occurrences include a robbery of a trucking outfit, social gatherings at the E C Janssen home, and farm purchases by I T Samuelson in Marquette Nebraska.

Osceola Hires New Deputy County Treasurer

Carleton Anderson of Stromsburg will become deputy county treasurer in Osceola after August first, succeeding Edith Gray who has resigned. Anderson, son of former state senator Victor Anderson, is Osmarsburg’s current assistant postmaster and will move with his wife to the Gust Gray home in south Osceola.

Obituary for Frank August Gustafson in Nebraska

Frank August Gustafson born May 30 1857 in Sweden died July 14 1936 at his daughter’s home in Hamilton County Nebraska aged 79 years 1 month 14 days. He emigrated to America in 1880 to Peoria Illinois and married Annie Nelson July 3 1882. They moved to Polk County Nebraska in 1885 and had two sons and six daughters. He lived as a farmer then small town resident after his wife’s 1928 death. He joined Swede Plains M E E Church in 1910 and remained a devoted father and neighbor. Surviving children include Arthur Polk Robert Benedict Gertie Johnson Polk Segred Johnson Polk Judith Carlson Polk Nannie Sigler Osceola Olga Larsen Marquette plus twenty grandchildren and relatives. Funeral Friday at the Carlson home and Swede Plains church with interment in Swede Plains cemetery conducted by Rev E R Peterson. Brauer Funeral home in charge.

Fire at Messing Farm Destroys Upstairs Room

Shelby Fire Department responded to a blaze at the Conrad Messing home one half mile north of Shelby on Monday afternoon. The fire started in a dresser in an upstairs room and filled the house with smoke. Most clothing and furniture were burned and the loss was partly insured.

York Supreme Court Upholds City Tax on Street Vendors

The Nebraska supreme court affirmed York’s ordinance taxing foreign baking firms on city streets. Good Food Products and Smith Baking argued the $2 daily or $10 annual fee was arbitrary and discriminatory, but the court found no discrimination and ruled the tax reasonable and nonconfiscatory.
