Polk Community Club sustains town through Fourth of July events

The Polk Community Club organized a traditional Fourth of July celebration with barbecue, games, and fireworks, raising funds for the Polk library while also remodeling the Community Hall and Viking Theater. The club supports the Summer Recreation Program, Christmas program with Santa, and other civic projects driven by volunteers, seeking renewed membership as its influence anchors community life beyond village limits.

Donations to Funds Include Lincoln Man's Gifts

Richard Myers of Lincoln donated five dollars to the Summer Recreation Fund and five dollars to the Polk Library Fund. Mr and Mrs Ted Dittmer and Kathy visited Sunday night with Mrs Otto Dittmer at Clarks.

Shrine Bowl Tackle Tom Carlstrom Named South Team Favorite

Tom Carlstrom of Polk has been chosen as a tackle for the Shrine Bowl South squad to play at Memorial Stadium Lincoln on August 6. At 66 and 240 pounds he is among the league’s tallest and heaviest players. He was a star athlete at Polk High School and will attend the University of Nebraska on a football scholarship. He earned all state Class D honors in football and basketball and led his class as president for two years. Also listed as South players from the area are Brad Regier and Lee Peterson. Stromsburg coach Dennis Kovizan will be an assistant coach for the South.

Hatfields and Stewarts Move Into Polk Properties

Mr and Mrs Chester Hatfield and family of Utica have moved into the Brazda property in east Polk. Mr and Mrs Donald Stewart and family of Lincoln have moved to Polk and are living in the Myers property north of the Methodist Church. Don is employed in the Citizens State Bank.

Micah Bicker is a patient at St. Francis hospital in Grand Istand for an eye injury from Saturday. Mrs Martin Hoffman Sr entered York hospital on Monday. Ruth Kroger entered York hospital on Monday for tests.

Nebraska requires immunizations for schoolchildren

Nebraska law mandates children under twelve receive measles rubella polio diphtheria pertussis and tetanus vaccines before school attendance unless a written refusal is on file. The State Health Department will assist schools this year to enforce compliance and urges parents to verify immunization records and contact physicians or public clinics to complete needed shots.

Polk 8 11 Girls Win Tournament Title In Two Extras

Polk 8 11 girls softball team defeated Rising City 3 to 1 in two extra innings to claim first place. Lisa Banson singled and Jennifer Widga hit a homer in the bottom of the fifth to seal the win. The squad opened with a 5 to 2 win over Osceola and followed with an 11 to 5 victory over Shelby. Waco beat Shelby for the consolation. The season finished 7 wins 2 losses with losses to Rising City and Waco.

Polk couple announces engagement of Virginia Miller and Jimmy Carlson

Mr and Mrs Don Miller of Polk announce the engagement of their daughter Virginia R to Jimmy L Carlson son of Mrs Betty Carlson and the late Arnold Carlson of Clarks. Miss Miller is a 1977 Polk High School graduate and her fiancé a 1975 Clarks High School graduate. A November 5 wedding is planned.

The library fund climbs past 1800 with new donations from bazaar sales and individuals. The board slows building work during heat but catalogs books and reviews storefront library ideas while inviting public input and donations to Violet Sundberg.

Farmers Union Hosts Junior Youth Camp in Nebraska

The Nebraska Youth Leadership Development Center near Aurora hosts the first annual Farmers Union junior oath camp for ages 8 to 13 from July 27 to 29. Sponsored by Hamilton County Farmers Union, the event includes classes, arts and crafts, skits, dancing, and farm cooperative education. Registration starts at 2:00 p.m. and costs 17.50 per camper with a Friday pot-luck finale. Area members are welcome. contact Jim Fehringer in Lincoln for details.
