A farmyard tale recalls the trouble of introducing a foreign rooster to a flock in the 1920s. The aggressive bird clashed with natives, sparking constant attacks and near-misses as a father and son hunted for the culprit, finally selecting the correct rooster after multiple decapitations. Edna Sundberg visited Frances Widga on a Friday afternoon.
Nathan Sundberg and his wife Julia, of Portland Oregon, died instantly in an auto accident near Crescent City Oregon while returning from the beach. Mrs Hannah Bodine and Oscar Sundberg mourn the loss of their siblings. Nathan grew up in Polk community and moved to Portland in December 1919.
Donations poured in during the week to support the library fund with gifts totaling several amounts. Mrs Oscar Sundberg, Mrs Orpha Due, Helen Johnson, and the Alfred family contributed. the Home Service Store building will house the library, and Mrs Alfred served as librarian for years.
Mrs Bill Tallman received her School Food Service Management Certificate and Assistant Dietitian Certificate on June 24 1977 at the New East Union East Campus University of Nebraska. Polk High School principal Ivan Kershner announced several area students inducted into The Society of Distinguished American High School Students. Inductees include Peg Neeman Sue Erickson Denise Sterns Dave Wolfe Mark Clymer Deb Bankson and Jean Ziegelbein for academic and civic excellence.
Daryl Fossberg has earned National Board for Certification credentials and is named a Certified Dental Technician. He and John Kurtz opened a Lincoln studio, Natural Prosthetics, offering full and partial denture restorations. Roger Fossberg, with a two year diploma from Central Technical College Hastings, works at Hastings Dental Ceramics focusing on crown and bridge restorations.
Rev. John Gregg appointed as minister for Polk and Marquette United Methodist Churches arriving from Belleville Ohio where he served six years as pastor. He and his wife have four children Ronald E. of Kentucky Thomas R. of Kansas and two others listed as Rydemour and Shad C. of Iowa.
The Mothersingers will meet Thursday at 9 30 AM at the Methodist Church. New members are welcome and a babysitter is provided. They will continue planning a fall talent show to raise money for the library fund contact Mary Jane Samuels or Carolyn Anderson to perform.
A Nebraska City couple announces the birth of Jason Daniel Kipper a son born July 7 at St Marys Hospital weighing 7 pounds 2 ounces. Maternal grandparents are Don Miller and others. Another birth notes Harvey Jecka of Council Bluffs Iowa and a son Andrew Jason born July 6 weighing 9 pounds 12 ounces with grandparents Ernest Bousquet Lincoln and Albert Jecka Brainard. A great grandmother is Ruth Lindburg. Mrs John Myers Polk becomes great great grandmother via Shanna Joe born July 8 in Vancouver Washington to Joseph McIntyre of Vancouver. Grandparents listed include Reg Carvalho Dorrie McIntyre and John Stoner.
The UMW held a July 7 church parlor meeting with Mrs Edward Saylor presiding. Program leaders featured "To Each A Rightful Share" through scripture prayer readings and film. Rev and Mrs Gregg spoke briefly on their family. August meeting set for 9:00 a.m. due to heat with lunch served by Mrs Vergil Bush Mrs Anna Kisler and Mrs Earl Stevens.
