A Thursday blaze at the Glenn Stevens farm destroyed a threshing machine and a straw-filled barn. Five horses perished in the fire. Neighbors noticed the fire as threshers left for dinner at the T A Stevens home a mile away. The local fire brigade arrived too late to save any property.
Polk County farmers with 1939 wheat allotments may obtain loans. Number 1 wheat at 67 cents with gradual price declines for lower grades. Two loan options exist: on farm storage with a 30 day post threshing hold and a $3 fee plus 1 cent per additional bushel, or warehouse storage with elevator certificate and $1.50 fee for 550 bushels. Raymond Waggoner of Osceola first to receive a loan, testing 54 and 290 bushels for $148.33. Social notes follow about visits to Carl Steelquist and trips to Omaha to see Adolph Johnson in hospital.
The churches invite worshipers to Sunday services with Sunday School at 10 and morning worship at 11 at the Bwe de Plains church and 10 and 11 at the Methodist church led by ministers E. E. Pengelly and E. E. Perigelly. The Quarterly Conference and Annual Meeting occur tonight, and attendees are urged to attend.
A page lists worship times for several churches including St Lutheran with Pastor Carl F Juergensen and Rev Paul Panring. First Baptist under Rev R M Bailey. Free Methodist led by W W Lee. Evangelical Free Mission with Rev Paul E Carlson. and Evangelical Free Mission Church events July 23 to 26 with Bible study and youth meetings.
The Flying Fingers 4 Sewing Club met at Donna Lee Sundberg's home on June 26 to discuss towel stitches and tour a Home Service Store. A July 12 meeting at Betty Branting's planned candy sales for Camp Seward and Osceola picnic plans were announced along with a sewing machine demo and holder patterns. An extra meeting is set for July 19 at Arlene Green's home, with the next regular session at Laura Jane Taylor's.
Unusual rains and a very early grain harvest push Polk county farmers to consider a second crop on stubble. Elvin Frolik warns only short time remains before killing frost, favoring early maturing crops like Sudan grass and forage sorghums for feed and pasture. Millets offer hay seed potential, while planning ahead for August rye or permanent pasture seedbeds.
Around six oclock Saturday evening the Shelby Fire Company answered a blaze at the John Smith farm one mile south and a quarter mile east of Shelby. The garage and an adjacent corn crib burned as wind and dry weather spread the flames. the buildings had no insurance. A church fire in Rising City followed, destroying the Lutheran church and prompting David City crews to assist in preventing further damage.
The Flying Fingers 41 Club met on Thursday July 13 at Mrs. R. L. Smith's home. Members wore their self sewn dresses from the last meeting and judged each other's outfits while giving individual team demonstrations. Muriel and Marjory Warnick served a delicious lunch.
The Arborville area shared threshers picnics at Riverside Park in Central City. Numerous local families and guests from Des Moines to Aurora visited relatives, attended church services, and enjoyed extended weekend visits and outings.

Reader recalls a Columbus park concert featuring about 40 older men in matching shirts. The crowd, parked cars and grass space, enjoyed instrumental and vocal solos. The writer urges more public music in Polk and requests coverage of local sports and a Sunday park concert once afternoons cool.
Elizabeth Jane Fell Walrath born August 24 1848 in Prescott Ontario lived in Rochelle Osceola Clarks Osceola then died July 14 at age 90 years 11 months and 20 days. Survived by sons E A Walrath and Harry Walrath and grand and great grandchildren. Services in Osceola Methodist Church with Rev Albert Monkman and burial in Osceola cemetery.
Club members and leaders earning prize trips to the Conservation Camp will depart for Seward on August 8 for a three day outing. Other leaders and members may arrange their own travel and pay a $4.00 registration. The camp runs 9 a.m. August 8 to a closing meeting after the evening meal on August 11, with activities including fishing swimming and county delegate programs. Mrs James McMeekin and Betty Leigh McMeekin of Shelby join Polk county as 4H members attending the holiday camp.
Platte county board of supervisors approved a resolution to seek a formal legal opinion from County Attorney J. L. Dougherty on potential liability of former County Treasurer W. L. Boettcher and former Sheriff Ed C. Kavanaugh and their bondsmen for non compliance with distress warrant statutes. The action follows a conference with State Auditor R. C. Johnson and Campbell Auditing officials.
Two Stromsburg men Herb Olson and Dan Evins returned from the Loup with a 46 pound catfish. They displayed the catch at Moore and Hunsaker lumber yard where onlookers doubted the size of the fish.
Mr and Mrs Cliff Cramer and their children left Friday to spend a week with relatives in Denver.
