Wheat yields prove strong with 25 to 30 bushels per acre and test weights of 57 to 61. Delays from heavy dews and showers slowed harvesting. farmers store grain as the price gap with government loans widens. Corn shows continued growth and decent rains raise fall prospects.
Mr and Mrs Walter Scheele of Lincoln celebrate the birth of a son Daryl weighing 7 pounds 13 ounces at Lincoln General Hospital on July 1. Mrs Scheele, Elaings Garling, is noted as the mother’s maiden name. Also born in Lincoln July 3 is Carl Ann daughter of Mr and Mrs Paul Gustafson weighing 6 pounds 8 ounces. A son weighing 7 pounds 13 ounces was born to Mr and Mrs Lowell Bills at Stromsburg Hospital on July 6.
Marine Private First Class Ray I. Scott, son of Mr and Mrs Foster Scott of Polk Nebraska, arrived at Inchon Korea aboard the General M. C. Meeha as a replacement for the First Marine Division. He joins the 1st Amphibious Tractor Battalion assigned as a tank crewman and enlisted in January 1952.
Two wind storms struck Polk and nearby areas over the past week. The first on Wednesday night brought gusts up to 100 mph, tearing branches and damaging television antennas, with outages from W-Power lines and REA lines near the Wayne Ramsey farm. A Friday afternoon storm caused hail and rain, breaking more branches and a few windows, with damage reported at the Carl Mundt farm.
The ninth annual Sandell family reunion gathered July 6 at Buckley Park with 52 of 82 relatives attending. A noon thickened dinner featured cake ice cream and coffee. late afternoon visitors joined the event. The 1954 committee includes Mrs. Earl Johnson Mrs. Elwood Sandell and Mrs. Merle Johnson.
Nebraska 1953 law requires any person firm or corporation buying grain from owners for resale to obtain a license from the Nebraska State Railway Commission before transacting such business and to meet bond and fee conditions. The act aims to protect grain owners from itinerant buyers and defines penalties and emergency provisions with license annual renewal and June 30 expiration.
The Midget baseballers beat Osceola 14 to 4 for their second win. Gaylen Lind pitched well for Polk with solid backing from Charles Long and Butch Paben at the plate.
The School Board of District 72 approved four bus purchases at a special meeting, bidding at 3675 dollars. Johnson Bros Chevrolet will supply two buses with Wayne bodies and Frederickson Imp. Co. two with Carpenter bodies.
The Oilers beat the Legion 18 to 7 after extra innings in a wild game while the Bankers outscored the Butchers 18 to 5. The Legion and Butchers also stumbled in the standings as Oilers and Bankers stay atop.
