Leon Stankel, a railroad worker in Wryoming, received a $100 Midland College speech scholarship for his oratory at Polk High School. He also earned the Normal College scholarship at graduation as salutatorian.
The Polk County Farmers Union picnic at Buckley Park featured a three dimensional slide show by E A Hedlund of Osceola about a Florida trip. Others included a piano accordion number by Marcel Berck, youth delegate Marilyn Hahn report, cornet solo by Sheralee Hill, and safety committee report by Paul Swanson. Notable attendees from Polk included Rev and Mrs Edick Anderson, Mr and Mrs Chas Dahlgren, Mr and Mrs Lloyd Hahn and family, and Sheralee Hill.
In observance of Father s Day the children of the late William Stevens of Polk donated his pioneer memoir From Sod House To Shelterbert to the town library. Mrs. O F Alfred, librarian, welcomes the addition to the library collection. Stevens wrote the story for his children when past 89. he died Oct 25 1952.
Norris Alfrai from Hamilton visited his parents this Sunday. Jeanelle Kroger and Lois Johnson attended a Counsellor conference at Camp Cedars for a Methdist Camp in July. Delores Anderson celebrated a sixteenth birthday with classmates and cake. Roger Gustafson and family visited Otis Williamson and then his in laws Dr and Mires. Linda Johnson attends the Intermediate Lutheran Bible Camp at Camp Cedars this week.
Open house for Mr and Mrs Grant Willits celebrated their thirty fifth wedding anniversary at the family home last Sunday from two to five pm. Friends and relatives from Michigan Illinois California and Colorado attended. A three tier cake by Mrs Robert Willits topped the table while Mrs Ray Johnson of Swede Home served. A brief program included songs by Sharon Delores and Beverly Willits and remarks by Mrs Clair Willits and Rev Elwood Anderson.
Pork businesses will close all day July 4 but will open Friday evening July 3 to serve weekend customers and accommodate shoppers.
Local 4 H club meeting draws seven divisions for lesson and planning. July picnic set for Harrison Park York and fair booth discussed with committee including Flick Janicy Van Ostrand Norquest Skaden. Shultz family hosted. Floyd Merchant hospitalized. Swanson Sterner clan picnic at Schuyler Park with attendees from Iowa Omaha Schuyler area. Reverend Paul Nelson preached after illness absence. Sunday evening hosts Norquests welcomed guests at Chas Norquest home.
Ellis John Nyberg 68 died June 22 1953 born November 1 1885 lived in the community. Survived by wife Alma three daughters Beulah House Naomi Jenkins Mildred two grandchildren. Funeral Thursday at the Methodist church Hordville conducted by Rev Harry Ratzlaff and Mr Howard Sandberg. Burial in Fridhem Lutheran Cemetery Hordville. Nieces Mrs Herbert Leach Ord and Gertrude Larson Grand Island attended.
Twelve Polk players saw action in a twi light game at Osceola with Polk boys winning 14 to 2. Butch Paben and Don Widga formed the battery for Polk, LaMar Lind and Charles Long stood out at bat, with Gaylan Lind, Jerome Light, Bruce Johnson, Lawrence Shenk and Bob Carlson among the fielders.
Rev Milton O Connor spends the week at Columbus as Counselor at the Intermediate Youth Camp. Mrs Cleo Cramer hosted County Federation of Woman's Clubs officers Thursday afternoon. Plans were discussed for the County Convention on September 30 with the Polk Woman's Club as hostess.
Sunday visitors included Mr and Mrs Henry Thelander and sons with Earl Thelander and Delano Ahlquist families near Clarks plus Hal Gordon and Clarence Nicol with Stromsburg ties. Monday evening diners were Mr and Mrs Sid Crow and sons at Ray Werner’s home.
Miss Erma Petersen of York and Pvt Curtis Hoffman of Fort Riley Kansas wed at St Johns Lutheran Church Cordova on Sunday June 28. Petersen is a York General Hospital nurse’s aide and Hoffman is from Osceola area. After a Minnesota honeymoon the couple will reunite in Alaska after his furlough. Guests included Walter Hoffman Darold Hoffman and Verlin Johnson families.
Farmers brace for a holiday harvest as fields begin to ripen. Lloyd Widge reported a fourteen acre yield of 32 bushels per acre at 60 pounds with 12 percent moisture. Polk area yields forecast at 18 to 20 bushels per acre with elevator capacity up to 26 000 bushels but no rail cars until full.
The third place Butchers beat the Oilers to alter the top standings as the Oilers and Bankers end up in a first place tie after a 8 to 6 Oilers loss and a 19 to 14 Legion setback. Dale Lindbure led the 8 6 win with power while Lloyd Lind’s three base hit capped the late rally.
Sunday afternoon a collision at the intersection a half mile south of High Prairie School involved Mrs Reuben Anderson and Mr Otto Swanson. In the Swanson car were Mr and Mrs Swanson and their grandchild daughter of Mr and Mrs Kenneth Mentick. The Swansons were taken to Osceola Hospital with Mr Swanson later dismissed Monday. Mrs Swanson suffered fractured ribs and an arm, while Mr Anderson was shocked but not hospitalized.
Dr Doyle Sundberg, a recon graduate from the University of Nebraska dental school and son of Mr and Mrs Albert Sundberg, becomes associated with Dr C R Peterson in Oscaola. An announcement appears elsewhere in this Progress issue.
