Polking Around On A Short Fourth Of July Issue

In observance of the Fourth of July we printed six pages and paused work to shout BANGs. We mailed pictures to the engraver last Friday hoping for a Monday return and were glad to limit pages after delayed mail. Weather this year remains a constant topic, as Dave Meline notes.

East Side Birthday Club Meets At Mrs Ehn Home

The East Side Birthday Club met Friday with Mrs Joe Ehn. Ten members attended and shared a social hour and lunch. A gift was presented to Mrs Ehn by the members. Visitors included Mr and Mrs Virgil Bayne of North Platte on Saturday and Mr and Mrs Dodge Clardy of Clarks on Sunday.

Polk Bean Days Set for September 8 and 9

Polk Bean Days will be held Friday and Saturday September 8 and 9 to align with Nebraska's Centennial Year. The Commercial Club plans a larger parade, invites business houses to enter, and the American Legion will run the children's parade. Events include a tractor pull, style show, Centennial costumes, and noon beans with barbecued beef for all.

Swede Plain WSCS Meeting Reported in Church Basement

The Swede Plain WSCS met in the church basement June 21 with devotion by Mrs Elmer Garner. President Mrs Lester Widga opened the meeting. Corsages for Missions were given to nine attendees with perfect attendance. one officer retired. Program leaders were Mrs Lester Widge and Mrs Patten.

The Rains Have Ended. Farmers Report Mild Weather

For the first time since May there was no rain in a seven day period though Clarks and Grand Island saw showers. Most corn and milo fields are weeded and look healthy aside from drowned patches. Wheat fields face second growth green heads and harvest has not begun yet as Lloyd Van Housen plans July 4 elevator opening.

The Polk High School Class of 1957 held a reunion and steak dinner at Grand Island Saturday evening. Polk Boys Win Little League Tournament

Polk boys age 10 and under won a 2 to 1 game over Gresham at the local field to capture the Little League tournament title. Shelby beat Benedict 2 to 1 for third place, trophies awarded for top three. A girls softball tourney follows with eight teams and evening games starting at 7:00 and 8:30 from Thursday to Sunday.

Polk Garden Club Meeting Report

The Polk Garden Club met on Tuesday June 18 with Mrs Sophia Klingsporn as hostess. Fourteen members and six visitors attended. President Mrs Irene Widga led the creed and club song. Care of flowers and gardens was discussed. Verna Fredrickson and Edna Neeman led the program. The lesson on freezing produce was noted as interesting.
